Pearce to take Distin risk

Premiership Manchester City
comment on the article
Sylvain Distin

Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce is willing to risk losing defender Sylvain Distin for nothing as he tries to persuade him to stay at the club.

Distin, 28, has failed to sign a new deal to take him beyond this season.

The Frenchman could leave for nothing next summer if he does not agree a deal but Pearce said he would not cash in on him in the January transfer window.

"I would rather keep him here and, if he leaves for nothing, that is just the way it goes," Pearce said.

What do you think of this, City fans? Do you agree with Pearce's approach?

If the city board are serious about keeping Distan then they need to put up the money to keep him happy. I am not saying they should pamper to his demands but he is a top defender and needs to be treated as such. If we are serious about keeping all of our top players then we need to make sure they have top contracts. This club is going places if we can keep the likes of Distan, Dunne, Richards, Barton, Vassell & Samaras. It gives us something to build on and that should go hand in hand with us making a serious push for a uefa place...

If he goes, with all due respect, I don't think it will be to Celtic.

kotk59: Distin didn't play v Wigan and we got stuffed 4-0! Good asRichards, Onouha and Mills might be the Dunne?Distin psrtnership is well established. It would be a major loss if he went imo.

im not so sure. i dont think hes at a fashionable enouhg club jsut now, to get a move to a true top side like barca...arsenel..lyon etc etc

but hes definately CL material and thats what celtic can offder him. hes exactly the sort of player for a club like celtic or PSV, who r decent cl sides...not set on always signing the starts of europe..but more on the players who'll do te job

I think Stewy Pearce has the right attitude. He has to concentrait on trying to keep Citeh in the Prem this season - his team is better with Distin than without him, so why sell him half way through the season. Pearce will be judged by the board of Man City on results, NOT on whether he gets a defender to stay at the Council House. Why should Pearcey be worried about the club losing the £2-4million transfer fee, when, without that player he may lay himself open to being closer to the sack.

(I'd love to see Distin at Old Trafford, but I'm not sure if Sir Alex will be given funds in Jan).

Red Since Munich, Man City's season and Pearce's appraisal at the end of the season does not hinge on one player. Distin should be cashed in on if he is reluctant to commit himself to the club.

If Distin is the difference between mid table and a relegation dogfight, he's worth a lot more to the club than whatever he'll fetch in a fire sale. Selling a player mid-season in transfer window conditions is short-sighted and I applaud Pearce for taking this view. It's refreshing and continental. People talk about "committing to the club" and "cashing in" but what is more important to any club outside the top four clubs is comfortable Premiership survival. You need to keep a team together for that.

to question a players commitment because he doesnt sign an extension is laughable at times. we live in the modern day football where players stay only a few seasons sometimes.

it is a difficult balance. on the one hand u have a player who has committed himself to a club for say 5 years. in that time he has given his heart and soul...should he not be entitled to seek a new challenge?

on the other hand u do have the club who spent X amount on a player and dont want to see him leave for free.

like i said....tough balance.

back to distin, if pearce puts crazy pressure on him and sales him in jan..we never knew whether he wud have signed that extension. good luck to pearce as he is a top manager
