Sports Personality contenders

comment on the article

The 10 contenders for the 2006 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award have been announced - and the shortlist is already causing heated debate.

There are six world champions, but no footballers or rugby union players.

Cricketer Monty Panesar is in the line-up, but cannot even make the England side.

Disability sport followers are aghast they have no representative.

Horse racing fans cannot believe 11-times champion jump jockey Tony McCoy is a non-runner.

The shortlist, which normally numbers five or six, has been extended to 10 for the first time this year.

It was drawn up after the most extensive trawl of opinion in the award's history - with the public and selected newspaper and magazine editors, plus a BBC Sport panel of experts, invited to nominate.

The full list of nominations makes fascinating reading.

In a mixed year for British sport, organisers believe it could be the closest contest in years.

But what are your thoughts on the candidates?

Frank

Why all the whingeing about Zara Phillips? She is both a European and World Champion. How many other sports people in the UK can we say that about?

Good evening Frank, still waiting for an answer why I could vote for Shelley Rudman on BBC West (when she beat Zara Phillips in a public poll) but not tonight?

"Pleeeeeeeeeaasssse
how long does JOE CALZAGHE have to be a world champion
to gain any respect from the British public?"

Well, he could start by becoming undisputed champion. Not only does he only hold a couple of versions of the title(?), he's one of two unbeaten supermiddleweight champions, so he should take on and beat Mikkel Kessler.

Joe Calzaghe fighting the number 1 contender and the only other guy out there with a claim to being the worlds best super middle. Your having a laugh. He would much rather defend against nobodies and say the bigger names ducked him.

Nice that one of the people who had actually won something earned the award..not a Murray,Button who are usually losers and the golfer who didn't even want to win it.

I almost agree with you, and I haven't altered my view, but I would have called Lacey a more dangerous proposition than Kessler.

The key difference between lacy and kessler is lacy is a yank.

Lacy's record is not that impressive, where as kesslers is better to be fair. The key question has to be, if kessler was american or if lacy was danish, who would have been the more dangerous. (Ring magazine ranked lacy number 3 before the calzaghe fight, to back up my claim that calzaghe has never fought a fighter ranked 1 or 2 at super middleweight)
