Owen confident on return

Newcastle United
comment on the article

Michael Owen, who had knee surgery after injuring his cruciate ligament at the World Cup in June, says he is confident he will play this season.

The Newcastle striker, who will be 27 on 14 December, told Five Live "The turn of the year will be the important time, when I have a scan, but I'm sure I'm going to come back as strong as ever."

Do you share his optimism?

I'm sure he'll be as good as new when he returns. My only gripe with the interview is he doesn't mention Newcastle and only seems concerned about England. We need him and his goals badly.

I don't think you can blame Eriksson. The injury was a freak accident, 100% fit or not, that was going to happen. Eriksson had a lot of faults and that's why he's not in the job now, but don't just jump on the band wagon and lump the blame for everything on him. If you remember correctly, it was Owen's foot that was broken for Newcastle. And his knee ligaments that were damaged for England. How are the two connected? (prize for anyone who says ankle, leg, bones etc)
It is silly little comments like this that give football fans the reputation of being thick. Think first please if you can.

No matter what anyone says, only two people know whether Owen will return to his best - his operating surgeon, and Michael himself. As a Toon fan, I would love to see him return to anywhere near his best, as we desperately need his goals. As someone who studied sports injuries for a degree, I know the limitations a cruciate ligaments injury can put on a person - both physically and mentally. The real test will come, not when he has to use his pace, but when he has to turn sharply with the ball to lose his man. If all is well, we will see Owen back close to what he was before this nightmare season and a half. If not, well hopefully he can adapt to a different style of play, or we may lose him altogether.

Either way, best of luck Michael, and please, come back and help us soon.

I think Owen has seen his best days. He's injury prone, when he gets back from this one it'll only be a matter of time until he gets another.

Its a great shame because, at his best, he was great to watch.

Not sorry he's not playing on Wednesday though!

With reference to TripeFc's comments about Owen, Wilkinson and Vaughn not being sportsmen. I think you are talking tripe, I'm sure all three would give anything to be playing the sport they love, and if the 5th top England goal scorer of all time isn't a sportsmen then who is? Giving interviews is part of being the best at what you do. I would love to see Owen back at his best, both at club level and with England. Not only is he a great player but also a brilliant role model for the next generation. I'd rather see him in the media giving interviews than rolling around in the curb blind drunk or in court for attacking someone in a night club etc.

I hope he's back to full fitness ahead of the summer transfer season!

Michael Owen is always 'confident' about something. The thing is that it's always misplaced. He was 'confident' he would be back and 'top goal scorer' in the last world cup. I'd hardly call a failiure to comprehend the mechanics of 'walking' anywhere near the ambition he was boasting.

Truth be told, Owen hasn't been any good for some time. He was truly awe-inspiring when he first burst onto the scene, but suffered some of the biggest goal droughts in the history of football. If he did a 'Rooney' and rufused to shave until he scored it would have been a beard of Gandalf proportions causing his crippling misshap rather than an ordinary flat peice of grass.

To all the naysayers who gripe about his optimism: well he's hardly likely to suggest that he'll never play the game again, is he?

At any rate, it's good to hear that he feels that things are coming along and that he does have the desire to continue. I only hope he doesn't try to come back before he's fully fit, as that was surely a contributor to his WC woes.

I think he can come back to play again. ACL injuries are quite common these days in many sports and they seem to have figured out how to repair them in order that the athlete can return to fitness.

I wish him the best of luck and look forward to seeing him play again for England.

Yeah, well said geordie500, Owen should come back with Zinedane Ameobi next season. Give them both time to recuperate.
