Pietersen's Ashes

Test cricket South Africa

Can Pietersen inspire England to victory in the Ashes? I don't think it is about class or talent I think that it is about determination from the Aussies not to lose, seems like Pietersen is one of the few in this and the last series who are deteermined for England not to lose. In both series he has had valuble knocks not always leading to wins but sometimes to draws or less demoralising defeats. These knocks must help to inspire the rest of the team.

calling on all english or australian cricket experts, preferably english cricket experts.

i'm trying to learn and follow the ashes in order that i can explain the events to the girls and boys in my class.

Why did England declare so early ? surely they would have wanted to make it harder for the australians to match our score or do we play twice ie bat twice in eact test?

Hope this makes sense.

This was not an early declaration, England needed enough runs to put pressure on the Aussies but at the same time we need to give the bowlers enough time to bowl out the Aussies twice to win.

Now there are three days left and 19 wickets to take. Given the performance of some of our bowlers of late this is still a tall order so we needed as much time as possible to do it in. At the same time the runs we have should ensure that the Aussies can't put England under pressure to lose the game.

As long as England can bowl the Aussies out for less than 351 they can request that the Aussies follow-on and bat again.

Hope this helps.

No, I want them to but just cant see the bowling attack smashing the aussies batting twice in three days. The match will prob end a draw and its shame we have not got Monty playing seeing how we dont really need the extra runs from Giles. But thats the old hindsight for you.

Thank you it does, thought that technically we or they palyed twice and can now see why they declared when they did.

I hope they can pull it off as i've heard that Englands bowlers are below par at the moment.

What would happen say we do get them out 351 all and then we played again and produced a similar score of 551 etc, would this mean an automatic win for england or a draw for both since there wouldn't be enough time for Australia to bat again.

Many thanks, do not have any cricket fans in family or friends besides an aussie who says women can't understand cricket.

The key to these Tests is whether England can keep Australia in the field long enough to get them mentally and physically down.
Australia have a problem chasing totals but are great once ahead. England must attack hard and keep the pressure on.

In a two innings match of 5 days or more, the side which bats first and leads by at least 200 runs after their opponents first innings has the option of asking them to bat again - called 'following on'. This gives them the opportunity of getting their opponents out again, without wasting time on a second innings for themselves. Of course, if the oppositions aggregate total from both innings is greater than the first innings score, the side who batted first can take their second innings. Before this can happen, Englan haveto get Australia out before they get within 200 runs of the English declaration. I've just realsied how easy cricket rules are until you tryto explain the! Good luck. winkeye

Thank you, i think its slowly starting to sink in.Lets just say that it is to be hoped that England bowl Australia out quickly in their first innings, make them follow on and then get them out very quickly.

I guess we'll all know more after todays cricket results.

It seems that England have taken a big risk...or am I just talking rubbish as a cricket novice?

i strongly believe that Pieterson has
the potential to become the best batsman in the world. he surely will inspire the English to return the ashes. though at times his profligacy gets the better of him. In any case we also have Collingwood who can score a double hundred hopefully he will score a triple ton.
