Larsson move may be inspired

Premiership Manchester United
comment on the article

Sir Alex Ferguson's love of gambling is not restricted to his beloved racehorses - he also likes a flutter on football.

Ferguson rolled the dice when he took the maverick Eric Cantona from Leeds in November 1992 - and backed a winner as silverware subsequently packed Old Trafford's trophy room.

Larsson is a gamble, not quite on the same scale as Cantona in the current circumstances, but one that may yet inspire the return of the title to Manchester United.

The Swede appeared to be winding down his career at home town club Helsingborg after playing a role in Barcelona's Champions League triumph last season.

At least he was, until a phone call from Ferguson offered him a three-month stint at Old Trafford.

Once the sense of disbelief subsides, it is a move that makes perfect sense.

And it is one that might leave one or two clubs cursing the fact they hadn't thought of it themselves - namely his former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill at Aston Villa, and the Scottish champions themselves.

Larsson may be 35 and not the goalscoring master that made him a Celtic legend.

But anyone who witnessed Larsson playing at Chelsea in the Champions League last season, and in the World Cup against England last summer, dismisses him at their peril.

Ferguson clearly feels he needs a short-term fix to protect against ending up a striker light, with Alan Smith still on the road to recovery and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer injured.

And what is there to lose in landing Larsson?

He has proved he is still an intelligent and influential player in recent times, and his game has relied more on these qualities as much as blinding pace.

Larsson is a master goal predator, and he will get plenty of opportunity to prove he has still got it at Old Trafford.

He may also feel it gives him an unexpected chance to silence the few doubters who questioned whether he could score goals in the Premiership, despite an incredible record of 242 goals in 312 appearances for Celtic.

Larsson has proved his worth on the world stage and with Celtic.

But with typically misplaced arrogance about the quality of the Premiership, he was treated with an air of suspicion by some south of the border.

He would have scored goals in the Premiership at his peak. Only an idiot would say otherwise.

There may be some who regard it as a desperate measure by Ferguson - parachuting in a 35-year-old whose best days are behind him as a quick fix.

Nonsense.

Chelsea may have done it a different way - maybe by way of another £20m-plus stop-gap - but this does not mean United are trying to win a title on the cheap.

Even if Larsson returns to Sweden in March without making an impact, it is unlikely his failure will cost United the title.

But if he succeeds, Larsson could be the man to help maintain their current lead over Chelsea.

Larsson is also the consumate professional.

He would not have agreed to join United for a holiday or take part in an exercise that would damage a reputation forged over a glittering career.

Credit to Ferguson for actually dreaming up this scheme and pulling it off.

And even the cynics must agree it will be a pleasure to finally see a craftsman such as Larsson operating in the Premiership.

Oh Mancygirlie don't you have to be in bed for school in the morning?

A 35 year old has been, that's what your club has given you for Christmas.Thousands of fans paying thousands each week and it's all going to the US to pay off the debt and you are happy about it.
There's loyalty and then there's stupidity.

No, as I am 28 years old. Resorting to patronising comments doesn't win you the argument. All I can say is rather spend nothing on someone with confidence (who incidentally Barcelona also wanted to sign on loan) than a £30m player who looks like a deer caught in headlights whenever he is given the ball. I am leaving this pointless argument now. I will return in 3 months' time when you are eating your words.

I need a catchy nickname why are you so bothered about who united sign? Everyone is well aware that Henrik Larsson is 35. Utd Are not counting on him long term, he is just providing back up for a few months and in the summer a more permanent signing can be made.

He may only have scored goals in quantity in two less famous leagues but in hais chance to finally prove all the doubters wrong by scoring plenty of goals for Barcelona, he got injured. What should be noted is that his goalscoring feats on the continent for Celtic mean he holds the record for number of goals scored for a club from British Isles in European matches. This is no mean feat considering he has beaten players like Van Nistelrooy, Henry, Law etc.

Oh and whats all this crap about every player having one good night. Can you name me any other player who has scored two goals in a UEFA cup final and created two goals in a Champions League final? Not any Chelsea player anyway.

Why don't you go off and worry about who Chelsea can spend another £30 million pound on, just because you are too impatient to wait for quality players like Shevchenko to adapt to a league that is completely different to anything he has played in before.

No need to take my word mate just look at his record. 2 seasons in a top league and 12 goals.
------------------------

12 goals as SUBSTITUTE in the Premiera Liga is still quite an achievement... even over two years.

Particularly for a player who was quite often used as a winger.

There is not many substitutes who get 6 goals a season particularly from midfield.

At Man Utd he has a chance to play in his prefered position, upfront.

How many goals would you say Rosisky or Julio Baptista would get, or Joe Cole or even Robben this year? What about Luis Garcia or Gonzalez?

What next! Are you going to say that Diego Forlan wasn't really playing in a top league when HE shared the Golden Boot with Henry?

need a catchy nickname.

You will eat your words when you see the contribution Larsson will give Man U. You're one of these people who automatically criticise a player because they played in Scotland. Which of course is pig ignorant.

Anyone who's seen him play regularly knows he's a top quality player and has been for years. He's Sweden's best player, MILES better than Ibrahimovich. You'll see.

Need a catchy nickname - on your profile you mention Zola as your best player...he was past it at 35 too was he? Larsson won the Golden boot after the competition was loaded in favour of prem/EPL/Bundesliga/SerieA etc. At Barca he was a supporting striker and not the main man hence the respect shown by Ronaldinho etc. and Barca did not want him to go, how did Chavski get on when he played in a team against them?

Larsson causes endless problems with his clever runs and passing, even if he doesn't get many goals for utd, he'll create them.
oh and catchy name, your an idiot

Catchy nickname is a bit of a numpty eh??

One good game? Other than the obvious golden boot etc, he's only managed to score against the likes of Valencia, Juve, Liverpool, Porto etc. UEFA Finals, WC 3rd place play offs, versus England etc

And the thing is, he'll create as many as he scores, as was witnessed during last season's CL final

Incidentally, he had to score 50% more goals than his EPL/La Liga rivals to win the golden boot due the scoring system that determines the winner

I don't know why i'm bothering with logic, you're clearly unable to comprehend most of what i say

doh

to quote Timmy_went_missing '
What kind of message does this give his youngsters? Or may be as Hansen immortally said 'You can't win anything with kids'.'

What!!!
If you knew anything about it you would know that the Hansen comment was made in the year SAF sold off established players and brought in six youth team players.
The same year Man Utd won the Double!!

How anyone with any sense at all would suggest that SAF would sacrifice the youth for the sake of bringing in older players doesn't know much about football, nor about SAF.

FACT!!! it is ManUtd history and policy to bring through good quality youth players, something that has been famously done since the 1950's with Sir Matt Busby. Many legendary names and great players have started out as youth players at ManUtd.
Not like some of the other "big clubs".
