E. Frankfurt 0-0 Newcastle

Antoine Sibierski tackles Christoph Spycher

Newcastle sealed the one point they needed to finish top of Group H after holding on for a hard-fought draw in the Commerzbank Arena.

The Magpies withstood a relentless onslaught and were grateful to keeper Shay Given for some superb saves.

Charles N'Zogbia, Belozoglu Emre and Antonie Sibierski had Newcastle's best chances in a fine rearguard action.

But Frankfurt paid the price for some glaring misses, shattering their slim hopes of qualification.

Professionalism that you dont associate with Newcastle. I'm a Man City fan but hope you get a trophy win this season you deserve it after Souness, Gullit and Dalglish. I sympathise with ur plight because city are the same!

I am almost scared to congratulate our great defence because they may get complacent, but super performance and what about nobby? he must have the heart of a lion as well as his super skill.Taylor Bramble and Ramage wow!

Another good performance by Newcastle, and yet another clean sheet. Everybody keeps talking about our defenc being rubbish, but we actually have the joint 7th best in the premiership, and also 1 goal conceded in 4 uefa cup games! THATS GOOD GOING FROM OUR MIGHTY TOON BACK 4!! Keep it up.

There hasn't been a lot of pretty football in the games so far. But it is very promising that Newcastle show some signs at least of being able to grind out results (if only they could do the same consistently in the league ...) Finishing top of the group sets Newcastle up for a potentially winnable tie in the next round. And should they get through to the last 16 few teams will relish the prospect of having to play them.

The comments by Forzavelez are rubbish. celta Vigo may have had some players missing but Newcastle have had players missing all season

I can't believe how poor Luque played yesterday. I didn't have many opportunities to see him play thus far this season but yesterday he was absolutely woeful and couldn't even be bothered to run 15 yeards, never mind sprinting or trying to beat his man. I don't know what happened to the guy because at Deportivo he was awesone at times and now he is a shadow of his former self, with no pace, no skills and no grit. Newcastle should cut his losses with him as soon as possible and hope to recapture at least a friction of what they paid for him. Must be one of the biggest transfer flops in recent history

forzavelez newcastle have had to play without most of the first team for a while now due to injuries, parker, duff, owen, ameobi, moore, babayaro, carr. because of this they are even playin players out of postion, ramage at left back and nobby at right back. despite all this they are proving they can get results. congrats to roeder for not usin injuries as an excuse

ForzaVelez I'm sure if Newcastle win or get to the final like Boro last year I'm sure the fans will care. Boro fans did, they relished it. I'm sure all the Premiership clubs who didn't make the UEFA Cup do care, it brings in revenue, and attracts better players who want to play in Europe.
