Arthur relinquishes belt

comment on the article
Arthur wants a crack at a world title in 2007

Alex Arthur has vacated his European super featherweight belt to turn his attention to becoming a world champion.

Arthur became Scotland's first European champion for 11 years in July 2005 when he defeated Boris Sinitsin and he has made three successful defences.

"With respect to the European title, we have taken that as far as we can," said promoter Frank Warren.

"He will fight in late February and it will be with a view to a world title challenge in the near future."

The 28-year-old from Edinburgh is in the top rankings of the four major world bodies.

He is rated number three by the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Organisation, number five by the World Boxing Council and number 13 by the International Boxing Federation.

Will Arthur become a world champion?

Will he become World Champion??? emm... by simply looking at the division (super feather) the answer is... i dunno lol. Arthur is awesome but Barrera, Pacman,Valero, Guzman and co also are. It will take the performance of a lifetime to win! My advice: fight Juarez for rankings (he is down due to back to back defeats against barrera) then face final part eliminator at WBA or WBO to get a shot! Tough challenge but not impossible and if he does it then forget about hatton or calzaghe, he will be the British p4p best!!! C'mon Alex, show everyone that you dont have to be heavily mediatised to be a true hero, do it for all us boxing fans!! We believe in you!

Arthur will go down the wbu route I reckon.
He does'nt stand a cat in hells chance against the top men in this division.
As for him lining up Juarez because he would give him a decent ranking....Rocky would KO Arthur within 4-5 rounds.
Arthur,at best,is fringe world class. This will be proved if he ever steps up

I doubt he will take the WBU route because that would be obvious that he was avoiding the big ones, for me, he would earn a lot of rewspect if he just takes on the big guys, win or lose, he will lose respect if he just settles for a lesser title.
If he takes on some top ranking world class fighters first of all to build him up, he could have a good chance against Valero or Guzman, maybe barrera in a years time if his still boxing, but Pac man is a long shot.

All I can say is Im behind him 100% and if he gets the shot, will probably be one of them nights when i lose my voice after 2 rounds

Don't get me wrong,I would love to see him do it,but unfortunately for him,his division is one of the strongest in entire sport these days.
Arthur has talent, but I can't see him seriously challenign the top guys.

i think i'd have to agree with all the above comments. as good as arthur is im not sure if he'll ever make it right too the top. looking around his weight classes, the competition is so strong im not sure if he'd ever become a tru eworld champ, tho he may briefly hold a belt if hes lucky. hopefully he'll prove everyone wrong but i wont hold my breath....

Lets not forget arthur is a rough and tumble kind of fighter who wouldnt b affraid to take a fight against anyone.

This is y i dont think he'll go for the WBU. Plus he has wayne mc in his corner who took on larios for the title twice, so he knows wot a real world title is!
