I would have gone with Buffon for reasons I've mentioned elsewhere, but Cannavaro is a good choice. At least they didn't go with Ronaldinho!

The fact is this: Cannavaro was the best player in Europe this year- Cannavaro wins the award!

Thing is, he was ordinary in the regular season, was embarrased in the CL and had his team relegated for chesting. Best player in Europe, I think not.

And as for Henry not succeding in Italy: Cannavaro has played terribly at Real Madrid.

Klose was top scorer, not Henry. His main contribution at wc was getting Puyol sent off by play-acting and then diving to win PK v Portogal in semi.

Cannavaro had incredibly strong performances at the World cup not only phycally but also mentally. However, Henry was the better football player during the whole 2006. And I think nobody can argue with that. I would have given the award to Henry then Buffon then Etoo.
Did you guys notice that the only EPL players in the top ten was Henry (2nd) 121 pts, Drogba (8th) 25 pts and Lehmann (10th) 13 pts ??
The first English player was Lampard (17th) 3 pts and then Terry (20th) 1 pt.
Drogba has been underrated in England for two years but has always been highly regarded in the rest of Europe and the world.
Etoo Suffer from his absence at the world cup.
I don't know how Ribery can be ahead of the likes of Viera or C. Ronaldo...?
No Shevchenko, No Ballack, presented as superstars...

Thierry Henry

Cannavaro was captained for Parma when they lifted the UEFA cup, Captain for Juve, and Captain for Italy.

2. Reached The World Cup final with France and was top goal scorer

Cannavaro reached the World Cup Final, won it on the day and kept certain french strikers very quiet throughout. Klose was the top scorer of the tournament. Henry scored one more than a Mexcian striker called Omar Bravo.

3. Reached Champions League final

Began well in the game however ( and yes he did) missed some important chances and Barca won in the end.

4. Became Arsenal’s all time record goal scorer

Well deserved but can't compare this to a defender.

5. Chose Arsenal over Barca, declaring his love for the club

Matt Le Tissier stayed for Southampton for all of his career eventhough there were strong interest from the bigger teams home and abroad. This does not mean he is best in the world.

I am just generally glad a defender have won this and for me Cannavaro well deserved to win this from his performance not just this year but throughout his career.

I think this award almost always goes to the best player in the wc in any wc year.As such this effectively rules out eto or ronnie.Italy won the wc bt this had nothing to do with cannavaro.france played incredible football esp in the knockout.Zizou 4 me shld grab allthe individual awards eventhough he is retired.He was magnificent.I do not excuse his headbutt bt it is not a morality award.Henry did play in 2 finals thiis yr bt the truth is in the big games he seemed lost.
