Southgate to stay for season

Premiership Middlesbrough
comment on the article
Gareth Southgate

The Premier League has given Gareth Southgate permission to remain Middlesbrough manager until the end of the season.

The 36-year-old had to be given special dispensation for his first three months in the job as he does not have the required qualifications.

The rules say a manager can remain as long as he has enrolled on the Pro Licence course.

But he does not yet have the necessary Uefa coaching badge to take the course.

Is this good news for Middlesbrough? How has Southgate done so far for Boro? Give your thoughts on this decision here...

The argument that a player will be a good manager just because he's played the game for umpteen years just doesnt wash.. It is a completely different discipline. The best managers have worked their way up either through coaching at lower levels within a club or managing at a lower level. Very few have just got a big job and been successful.

We need to get out of this mentality in this country that players are given major coaching and managerial positions purely as a 'reward' for their endeavours as a player or loyalty to a club. If we want to improve the level of coaching in this country and thus the quality of player we produce then we have to start sticking to some sort of rules to force people to learn their trade properly before diving in at the deep end. If we dont do that then we will continue to lag behind the other nations...

I wonder if the premier league will give the same dispensation to a foreign manager based on the same circumstances.

In any other profession more applicants for the position would have very strong grounds to take MFC to the employment tribunal.

It is unprofessional to employ an unqualified person to do a job for which requisite qualifications have been established.

I wish I had applied for the job. With my PES experience I would be a shoo in or sue them

If the club think you are good enough. Then they should be allowed hire the person they want. It is pointless having a rule and not enforcing it. The other managers have a right to be annoyed.

I do agree with most people on this. Its a bit of a shambles, persoanlly I dont think courses make a good coach, in time im sure he will be a good manager, but maybe for a year or two he should have been an assistant to help learn the role.

The FA is to blame here, i dont agree with the rules but if they are there they need to be obeyed by all.

Its a pity because it does anger people because of GS getting different treatment, when it should be the same across the board.

The wrong people are in charge at the top, if there were level headed, better organised people in the FA then there wouldnt be this problem.
Just goes to show that they have got FA right as usual!

But a long GSis there at Boro, good luck to him.

For those who've argued that playing doesn't make you a good coach, I agree completely. But it IS better preparation than the UEFA coaching qualification.

Moreover, I agree the level you play at is no indication of the level you (might) manage at. BUT, it is far more sensible to appoint a manager who knows how a big club and multi-million pound players need handling rather than someone who has only ever dealt with lower-league part-time postmen. This is in no way offensive to part-time players or postmen, but I'm sure the motivation/training needed for them differs from that for professionals on £50,000 a week. It'd be nice to be idealistic and say everyone's motivation is a love of football and winning, but that's just not true.

SIITA, do you ever get the feeling that you could take over Lamb's & Allan's jobs and within 6 months there'd be bigger attendances, more kits sold, better (cheaper) players bought and generally less mis-management?

What price a bit of paper for goodness sake. Sir Alf didn't have it, Sven did - says it all really.

Very good point! and the funny thing is, Sven has paper thin skills.

Borofan above has good points though, 15 years playing does make at least a good grounding for someone who has not played and only has course work to go on.

The unfortunate thing is these courses dont give you the most valuable asset, and thats experience.

People like fitness coaches and physios need qualifications, not managers

I think Southgate at the end of a season with a years managerial skills under his belt would be better than a Southgate at the beginning of one with an 'A' badge on his CV

whats a joke is that the reason he was aloud to stay as manager was because of england commitments, bulls**t he hasnt been in the squad since 2000 and if he couldnt of found the time to do it over the last six years then he isnt worthy to be our manager. im sick of the crap that comes out of the mouths of middlesbrough's managers backroom staff and chairman. they actually expect us to belive it aswell, looks like im throwing me season ticket at them this year.
