Ferenc Puskas

Hungary and Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskas has died at the age of 79.

Puskas led Hungary's golden team of the early 1950s, before taking Spanish citizenship and becoming part of Real Madrid's all-conquering team.

How highly do you rate Puskas in the list of footballing greats?

My dad was about 13 when he saw Hungary destroy England. He swears to this day that the man had the ball tied to his boots, and that the England team, who hadn't lost at home for decades, looked like boys against men..

"Up there with George Best" he used to say.

I think that says it all.

Discrimination of “Hungary legend Puskas” in the early 1960s in socialist Hungary!

I was about 10 in Budapest in the early 1960s when I got from my father a table soccer team Real Madrid with photos. BUT Puskas WAS NOT in this team!!! (Because he was managed in that time as a dissident.) I knew who was he only from my father. He came home firstly to Hungary just in 1981.

A great player from that dark (red) era.

And now, he is “the sportsman of nation” and he is being “the dead of nation”.

RIP Puskás Öcsi

when rooney scores as many goals and achives what puskas did then he will be considered great player puskas was a legend and a true great he played the sport when men were men and not the overpaid over rated footballers you get to day you only have to touch them and they fall down so dramatically you would think they had been shot they should take time to think what this great sportsman achived and then bow down and humbley beg his forgiveness for acting they way the do on the football feild

I'm hungarian, and I read, that hungarian's red era cancelled Puskas from the story of football, in 1960s. Yes, it's true. Political power cut off him from a film (Keleti Marton:Csodacsatár), they said, Puskas had died, and so on. But never mix up the republic of hungary of nowadays and the the comminism folkrepublic of hungary.
That days was other, darker, "more red"...But Puskas lived, and live now too. Maybe, his body is dead, but his fluency, talent, humanity will live forever.
My first memory of football was the stories about Puskas, Hidegkuti, Czibor, Budai, Grosics, Buzanszky, the legend GoldBand, the 6:3...they are THE FOOTBALL for me.
One of my biggest experience, when I was able to speak with Buzanszky Jenő in phone.
Puskas Ferenc was fantastic. No one can repeat his goals and stats. One of his games was to kick the corner flag...I dont know any other fottballer, who can do it again and again...
Hw was fat a little, but he was strong and talented. God blessed him with a very outsatnding life and talent and humanity.
Once, he said, footbal is over neck and without legs. Because it's all in head. If someone imagine, and think his act, he will do it.

Rest in peace Öcsi Bacsi, we will never forget you...

All I have watched of Puscas are a few video clippings, mainly from the European Cup final in 1960. One of the greatest, maybe the Greatest from mainlnad Europe. Myself being a Real MAdrid fan,I simply would love to have him back from the corridors of the dead and play at the Bernabeu. But the dead never return,do they?

Puskas: RIP. Officially you never won the world cup but you are remembered much more fondly than the side which actually did win it.

Never were truer words spoken.

who ever put rooney up against puskas--must be a mank and an idiot----83 goals in 84 games for his country--512 in 528 for real madrid--absolutely sensational--plus all the stuff he had to suffer in his life---leaving home land the death of koscis--if alfredo his team mate says you are great, you must be great

Puskas was by all accounts a brilliant player and would be a superstar if he played in any era.

He would feature in my top ten but not top 3:

1/ Maradona
2/ Pele
3/ Di Stefano
4/ Cruyff
5/ Beckenbauer
6/ Best
7/ Puskas
8/ Socrates
9/ Van Basten
10/ Zico

The closest English player would be Bobby Charlton but too be frank would not get into the top 20 with Dennis Law & Jimmy Johnston being slightly ahead of him.
