Newell keeps Luton job

Championship Luton Town
comment on the article
Mike Newell

Mike Newell has kept his job as Luton manager - but has been severely reprimanded by the club.

Newell was in trouble after a verbal attack on female official Amy Rayner and chairman Bill Tomlins following Saturday's 3-2 home defeat against QPR.

He was asked to explain his attack on Tomlins and a statement from Luton said: "Any repetition of such conduct will not be tolerated."

Newell apologised to the board and assured them there will be no repeat.

What do you make of the news? Are Luton right to keep Newell on?

This decision is disgraceful and cowardly. Hopefully someday soon some serious action will be taken to wipe out ingorance such as this from such a prominent aspect of our daily lives. Newell should be ashamed of himself, but Luton doubly so for not taking the right action.

I think the point about no bloke refs in womens world cup sums this whole issue up. Women refs in Womens football and male refs in male football. Then there would be no arguements.

Great decision by the board (unusual for them to make good decision) but hopefully we can now get on with winning on saturday!!

So you refuse to post my comments on this matter - too hot for yous to handle? What about freedom of speech? Feminization of football/society is a fact! It's not my fault that these people are sexist but do not have the intelligence to understand where their fear is coming from. What do women think men are? They think they are just like women, but with different genitalia. This is the nonsense - see today's debate about alcohol and rape. Women are allowed to not have control under influence of alcohol, but men must have control. Incredible sexism against men.
Why do you ignore my views and insult my freedom of speech. Don't you agree with me bbc fascists?
Email me with a response if you have the "balls" - I doubt very much you do, but I am interested in your censorship from a cultural point of view.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The mock outrage expressed on this thread that a man should manage not to be sacked after saying something that they don't agree with is quite ridiculous. Mike Newell is entitled to his opinion, and in a country that prides itself on freedom of speech he should be allowed to express that opinion.

Our society has mutated into a strange place when most people think first about whether it's pc to say something before they consider the merit of what was said.

Having said all that I don't agree with Newell's comments in the slightest. I do however respect his right to express them. It was hardly a call to arms afterall.

Crazy crazy world.

(Incidently.. very poor journalism by the BBC on this issue. The 'sexist' angle has been reported ad nauseum whilst the real story, and the reason for the serious consideration given by the board, was his comments about the ineptitude of the chairman... fortunately for Newell they don't have the strength, neither personally nor of image, to sack him.)

Sadly he just snapped and in hindsight has apologised, Im not surprised Mike is frustrated, we had a perfect site in J10 and a landowner willing to alow it to be used and the excuse that its no longer viable because of airport expansion is pure fantasy! After all they are building a new casino, shopping centre & housing estate on the old Vaauxhall site which is much closer to the airport, who actually dont even have planning permission for the expansion its just an outline plan. If anyone other the MWC owned the land im sure we would still be moving to J10 site but the stuborness of the board are hindering our chances on & off the pitch. A club is nothing without the fans and the club should do well to remember this

Mike Newell's comments are a disgrace to football. To imply that women should not be involved in football is utterly sexist and simply wrong. What Newell ought to remind himself of is just who would wash and iron the the team strips? Who would brew the tea and make the sandwiches at half time? And what about the sheer beauty of those footballers wives? Football without women? Get real Newell

I can understand in a way where Newell is coming from, but the way he expressed his feelings were completely wrong, but fair play to him he came out and said sorry and even explained why it took a day or to for him to do so!!

I think this point is a very good one...Now i'm not being sexist at all...hell I cant afford to be when I work in an office full of women, but keep the women's game to the women & the mens game to the men then we will not have any of this nonsense!!!
