Clijsters firm on retirement

comment on the article
Kim Clijsters

Former world number one Kim Clijsters has re-iterated her intention to retire from professional tennis next season.

The 23-year-old has declined an invitation from the Belgian Olympic Committee to represent her country at the 2008 Olympics.

The injury-prone Clijsters announced last year that 2007 would be her last season on the women's tour and says she has not changed her mind.

I am a big fan of Kim Clijsters and I will be sad to see her leave the tour as I think that she is a great ambassador for it. But I do know how frustrating it is to be plagued by injury and you have to think of the long terms effects this can have on her body and I completely understand where she is coming from when she says she wants to have a healthy future. I wish her the best of luck in the future and she will be greatly missed but I'm still hoping that she might change her mind......fingers crossed smiley

I really think this will be a huge blow to the game, whilst we still have the likes of maria and justine she is a great athlete and in my opinion could hold the number 1 spot for many years to come if it wasn't for injuries. Good Luck Kim! smiley

I really hope she has some solid retirement plans or some career to go to, otherwise boredom can soon set in and she finds herself returning in 2009, when other kids are now on the block and winning becomes more difficult.

I also hope she has invested her money wisely, and won't be spending it on free beer for her hometown as she did after winning the USO last year.

Anyway, go for it Kim in 2007, and win some GS, then retire knowing you've given it your all biggrin
