Tottenham Hotspur 3 - 1 Port Vale

Tom Huddlestone struck twice, and Jermain Defoe hit a late third, to save Tottenham from an embarrassing Carling Cup exit at the hands of Port Vale.

Leon Constantine put the League One side ahead when he drove Akpo Sodje's header through Radek Cerny's legs.

Huddlestone took the game to extra-time when his free-kick flew in, although Dimitar Berbatov may have got a touch.

He put Spurs ahead with a deflected 25-yard effort before Jermain Defoe gave them some breathing space.

We won, thats all I ask in games like this. As long as we play attractive football sometimes then I'm happy.

With so many first team players rested it was never going to be easy,or attractive, but a win's a win.

It was Davids, Daws, Defoe and the boys. If Spurs had got an early goal it would have been fine but Port Vale showed up the lack of cohesiveness between the regular first teamers and the rest and so Martin Jol had to bring on the big guns to make the difference.
That said it was an entertaining game, with chances coming regularly and a bit of tension thrown in. The big difference for Tottenham was at the back. Dervite grew in confidence as the game progressed but Spurs missed King and the decisiveness we usually get on the flanks.
The job was done, some regulars were rested ready for the two games next week but in the next round we'll need to be at full strength.

I did not get chance to watch the game. However, MJ had to rest some players with the number of games we will hopefully pay this year. He also has to look at some of the fringe players as we will get key players injured during the season.

So far Huddlestone is showing he is just about ready. Murphy is looking pretty good this season when I have seen him, far btter from last year.

Anyone know why Mido did not play a part? The Mido/Defoe partnership seemed to work well last year, and this season???

I was at the game last night and i would like to know where mido was? It was the first time i had seen Andy Barcham play and to be honest i was wondering why he was on the pitch in place of Mido and why he has been given a new contract? Did not look up to the pace and looked out of his depth, big sigh of relief when Berbatov came on and opened the Vale up more.

I was there too and Andy Barcham definitely struggled, but then again so did a few others. It was a relief when Huddlestone equalised and inevitable that we'd win in E.T.
