Champions Trophy final

One-day internationals
comment on the article
Nathan Bracken

Who will win the ICC Champions Trophy final, world champions Australia or holders West Indies?

The home crowd and the form book may have demanded a different match-up but those of us who grew up in the 1970s, with the Chappells and Lillee on one side, Garner and Lloyd on the other, couldn't imagine anything better.

Brian Lara's men had to come through the qualifiers for this tournament because of the machinations of the ICC one-day rankings but success here would be a major boost with the World Cup in the Caribbean just months away.

Ricky Ponting won't let the result here sway his side's preparation either way but a knock to the confidence ahead of the Ashes wouldn't go amiss.

Who are you rooting for? Australia? Have you no romance in your soul?

I'm writing the match report for the game so I've got to be impartial but I'll be around to discuss the major issues - perhaps with a little less of an officious tone - here.

The action got under way an hour before 606 opened for the day and it's been all action so far.

Windies opted to bat first even though they have chased for much of the tournament; Chanderpaul went crazy early; Gayle should have been given out caught behind, then went on the rampage.

When McGrath finally arrived he was smacked for six in his first over, then 14 off three balls by Gayle; Bracken was outstanding to take wickets with two slower balls and a cracker that seamed away to beat Gayle.

Kapil's son/s never played for India. Nobody named Viv Richardson played for WI.
Nothing can be passed genetically. If it were the children of Nobel Prize winners would be Nobel Prize winners and the son of an illiterate man would also be illiterate.Viv Richards father,or Clive Lloyd's dad did not play test cricket.

It was disappointing for windies to collect only 138 runs when Gayle and Chanderpaul were leading the innings with brilliant attacking play.
Good comeback from Aussies bowlers, especially brilliant Bracken.
Aussies should win their 1st champions trophy but let's see rain will favour windies or Aussies.

I'm not surprised we've gone a bit off-topic as this game has gone completely flat. Loads of time for Oz to get the runs and no incentive for them to push too quickly.

even the Five Live commentary team are talking about the rugby. Bit of a terrible anti-climax thus far, but I'll take it anyway. Nice bit of momentum for the Ashes and the Poms are going to want to cream the PM XI if they are going to have confidence whatsoever going into the Gabba test. Going to be some late nights coming up, me thinks.

Here it is....
The trophy Aussies were desperate to win and again they showed the characters inside them to be the best team in the world..
Also a great series for windies and form of Gayle should boost them to do well in the coming worldcup at home.
Ricky Ponting and his team is the best.
Shane Watson, a new discovery for the Australians in this series.
I think C. Gyle should be awarded the man of the series. Good luck for Ashes and World cup to Ricky Ponting's side.

West Indies lacks the mental toughness to beat Australia in the finals. Lara has been off color, he has always been unpredictable. The ODI wickts for this trophy were not at internetional level.

Bit of a damp squib to finish things - the third successive Champions Trophy final hit by rain - but an entertaining tournament as a whole.

I think the real winners from this tournament have been West Indies, who've had a tough couple of years but now look well set heading into the World Cup.

Australia just keep steamrollering. It's now been 10 years since they last lost in a major one-day final and you would have to put cash on them - if you're that way inclined - to win their third successive CWC.

The way Australia treated BCCI chief is not just a cricket.
