Has Fifa gone crazy?

Premiership Arsenal

Fifa want to force teams to play at least 6 homegrown players every match:

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

Surely this would contravene European Law. If such a rule is to be brought in, I'm sure it would have to mean a minimum of 6 EU citizens in the team.
Any-one got any views?

That last paragraph was directed at chandler83 not the previous poster.

Wenger's attitude to this is something I agree personally with...

Wenger said: "Football bodies have to care about the level of the game - that does not mean protecting mediocrity.

"Elite sport is first about quality. I wouldn't like to say I paid £2m for a player as he has the right passport."

What a suprprise that it's Wenger who's against... Forcing teams to play with homegrown talents is a fantastic way of breaking young players. Just look at all the English players from West Ham's late '90s/early 2000's harvest, or Ajax's squad of well trained street kids beating clubs with three times their budget in '94 to '96. I could give many more examples, but I think I've already proven that homegrown quotas are a good idea.

Also, to the accusation of this being against the law, please tell me how it is ethical for a big club like Arabsenal to get boatloads of underaged, poor players from Africa via some obscure Belgian club, and then deposing of them in Europe with no money or documents when they fail to meet expectations? Quotas would also deal with a big part of this problem.

I think a country which glorifies players of the mediocrity of Carrick and Reo Coker needs all the help they can get from abroad, as well as from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, ROI, the Channel Isles or whereever!

Carrick went to Man U for 18 mil, and with a coach of Fergie's level at the helm, that'll mean he's no muppet. Also, look at how bad spurs are doing withour him, his is their only major departure this season.
As for Reo-Coker, the lad's not even out of his teens and he's captain of a premiership side that was 7th last year if I remember well, and I wouldn't call him mediocre if forced to do so at gunpoint.

This proposal is hilarious. How do they see that happening, in a globalisation context? does the Fifa realise the far reaching implications of this "suggestion"? We are missing the point here, gravely! Professional football clubs are profit seeking businesses, that's it. I thought Fifa was meant to promote FOOTBALL through the cult of excellence. This looks like a u-turn toward certain dark ages...

Dein is an idiot! Without protection the England team are doomed. The rest of Europe see it why don't we? If we select our players against the world it will be nearly impossible for an Englishman to get a place in a side that commits to buying foreign players from any country! Time to act and think with common sense!
