Harrington wins Order of Merit

comment on the article

Padraig Harrington has claimed his first European Order of Merit title at Valderrama.

Robert Casey was in pole position to be crowned Europe's number one going into the final day of the Volvo Masters, with David Howell and Robert Karlsson also in contention.

While India's Jeev Milkha Singh got on with winning the tournament, a final round of 69 from Harrington combined with Sergio Garcia's slip-up at the 18th to see the pair tie for second, and give Harrington the title.

Give us your views on Padraig's achievement.

Quite a few little Englanders coming out of the wood work to pour scorn on Harrington winning the European order of merit, particularly some one called 'Sesquipdalian' He tells us people are not that well disposed towards Harrington because of his poor performance in the Ryder Cup.What on earth had the ryder cup players performances got to do with the order of merit. Are you suggesting Sesquipdalian that Harrington wasn't trying in the ryder cup? because if you were you couldn't be more wrong. If there's one player in the world that will give everything on a golf course, its Harrington. It's rather a shame you had to come out with all the if only's when it came to Howell and Casey whilst putting a dampner on Harrington's gutsy performance. Its hardly harrington's fault that howell wasn't fully fit and Casey was sick.Personally I think Harrington is a bit too erratic to win a major and if I was a betting man I would back either Casey or howell to reach that target first.

Some people have very short memories Criceto. Before this year's cup, Harrington had won over 58% of his matches, including ALL his singles. How many European players achieved that record? Not Faldo, not Woosnam, not Sandy Lyle, not even Bernhard Langer. And how can you forget the "Battle of Brookline" when Harrington was the first to claim even a point for Europe when his preceeding teammates could not even muster a half point before him!

My My sesquipedalian - don't blame Harrington for his poor Ryder Cup performance - he puts his heart into everything he does and it didn't work out for him this time. You should be blaming Woosie for continuing to pick him when he was under-performing. A bit like Lehman continuing to put Woods & Michelson out when they couldn't pull it off either. Harrington deserves the Order of Merit - he has been the most consistent over the year and it's not his fault that Howell got injured. Anyway, who's to say that Howell would have continued in the winning vein if he hadn't been injured? There are no guarantees in golf - it's the results that count.

Stfletch, the commentators are perecftly entitles to say European No. 1 as that is the title Harrington holds. Of the players that play in Europe on a regular basis he is number one.

As for Casey & Howell it was tough luck but tough crap none the less. Just as in football you play till the end regardless which Harrington did. And the cheek of however called him inconsistent enough not to be able to win a major!! Do you know anything about golf??

Harrington has been one of the most consistent European players over the last 5 years. His performances in Majors is prob in the top 3 of all Europeans over the past 20 majors. I hope he is the European that breaks duck on majors.

Just can't argue with Padraig with the Order of Merit. He fully deserves it and let us all hope that this will spur him and other european players on to win a major next year!

I think that Padraig was very hit and miss with his golf this year - BUT - we cannot take it away from him he has won The Order of Merit.

He went to a tournament that he does not like playing in to bring his earning up and to put himself in line for The Order of Merit.

Well done Padraig with regard to winning a Major he had his chance this year and choked - he will not find it easy to win a Major but I hope he does good luck to him. ok

Surely that only makes him the European TOUR no.1, that's different from the actual European no.1.

Really? People don't think Padraig was disappointing at the Ryder Cup?
Who is being one-eyed here!!!
Fellas, the context was which players in the theatre of Sunday's thrilling denouement could be deemed 'lucky', 'fortunate' or conversely 'unlucky', 'unfortunate' - not how hard Padraig tried at the Ryder Cup (who said he didn't try, pal? Not me.), when it comes to forming an opinion and a context, PH's results in the Ryder Cup were salient, and let's face it, DISAPPOINTING.
I'm a big fan of Mr Harrington - most people would tell you that Howell or Casey seemed more in the frame for the win, that is all. Why start whingeing about 'little Englanders'? Don't think it's me showing the island mentality here, ironically.

You seem to be splitting hairs here. The person who wins the order of merit is usually considered to be Europe's No 1.No one complains when Els and Goosen wins it.Is it an Irish thing with you? It looks like it .

amazingscholes,
I think you missed my point a bit. I would complain even more if anyone started suggesting Els or Goosen where Europe No.1 if they won the order of Merit beacuse they are NOT EUROPEAN! They could of course still be considered the best players on the European Tour though which is the point I'm trying to make.

Harrington quite clearly is European and so could be considered Europe's No.1, but the World rankings don't support that at the moment(alhtough in the past he has conclusively been Europe's No.1 and quite possibly could be again in the future).

(Oh and you're absolutely right, I am splitting hairs.)
