Defoe's nibble

Premiership Tottenham Hotspur
comment on the article
(l-r) Jermaine Defoe, referee Steve Bennett and Javier Mascherano

What do you all make of the Defoe nibble on Mascherano from yesterday's game?

Is it another case of the media blowing it all out of proportion as Defoe himself has claimed.

Or should the FA investigate as Sports Minister Richard Caborn suggests.

I'm with Defoe on this, it looked pretty harmless and he admits he perhaps shouldn't have done it, but the referee was right on the spot and chose a yellow card.

What's your thoughts? Should Defoe have been sent off for his actions?

Can someone actually explain to me what a "playful nibble" is please? Maybe your lover may give you one, maybe your dog, but between two grown up men of opposing football teams? There is something very uncomfortable about that I think.

whats Defoe thinking putting out a statement saying he didn't bite him. that is stupid, i like the guy and player, but he is making himself look silly. Hold your hands up[it has to be said it wasn't a full force bite, but a bite never the less]. admit you were frustrated and lashed out impetuously and that's the end of it. but denying is insulting to fans who have eyes to see with!!

It seems to be wholly unfair that when an incident provokes public outrage such as Ben Thatcher on Pedro Mendez. Why in this case are they not relooking at it

Although the "nibble" can't be condoned, if JD felt the need to react to what looked like a West Ham tactic to foul him continually, I'm glad he bared his teeth rather than lashing out with his fist, or in some similarly unsportsmanlike fashion.

It's ridiculous that he's being defended, and excuses proffered. He bit a bloke, it's sport, forget 'being fouled' yadda yadda. There was talk pre season of Villa signing Defoe, but I don't really fancy that anymore, the boy has made himself look like a right pillock. I mean there is a picture of him with his mouth on his arm and he's tring to say "I never bit him". Maybe the blind will believe you Jermaine, but the rest of us with eyes can see exactly what you did, and frankly its a bit disgusting - not that he did it necessarily, but that he's trying to say it was nothing.

Of course Defoe should have been sent off and with the evidence there for all to see some retrospective action should be taken against him.

I won't hide the fact that as a West Ham fan I despise Defoe. Mainly because of the way he handed in a transfer request hours after we were relegated. However, I think the FA did kinda miss the boat in regards to this situation. By not punishing him for this bite is a disgrace and the FA should be ashamed of themselves. I was taught as a toddler not to bite people and Defoe has just proven once again that he is just a baby trapped in a boys body (won't say man as he is a mini-footballer), I think they should have thrown the book at him, DEFOE IS A DISGRACE TO ENGLISH FOOTBALL!

Whilst I don't think it was a bad incident, Defoe is certainly very strange if he thinks that biting someone is the best way to take out your frustration. Maybe he wasn't taught as a child to stop biting? Maybe he's got a screw loose somewhere?

I'd like to see the FA challenge him as to why he did it; why did he feel the need to bite a fellow professional? And I don't mean "because he was being fouled a lot" but why bite?

It's all very strange...

i think the only reason he didnt get sent off is because the ref panicd. mascherano fouled him and the ref panicd about what to do and perhaps thought he had to give the same punishment to both?! because defoe was only booked the fa wont do nothing because it will look bad on the refferes they employ! more and more times this year a referee is guilty of a poor decision or a contraversial incident but the fa have am image to maintain so they wont go against a desicion a referee makes in a game!

Cockney Boqueron...

I totally disagree with you. If West Ham players were continually fouling Defoe (haven't seen the whole game - so can't comment on that) maybe he should've let the referee deal with the situation rather than taking the law into his own hands and getting himself a needless booking by nibbling like a rat.

Are you saying that baring your teeth to an opponent like that is sporting behaviour and perfectly acceptable? Ok, Mascherano made a meal of it - a pinch on the arm would have hurt him much more - but he got a yellow.

How would Spurs fans have felt if one of their players fouled Mascherano and he responded by nibbling their arm? Wouldn't they find it a bit odd?
