McClaren's no Venables

International football England

Steve McClaren’s 3-5-2 formation for the qualifier against Croatia is nothing new, and this conservative approach for an away qualifier sadly mirrors the tactics of many past England managers when the going gets tough: let’s not get beat, ‘win ugly’.

However, one misplaced comparison being hashed around is that McClaren’s 3-5-2 is comparable to Terry Venables’ 3-5-2 used successfully at Euro ‘96. Please!

Okay, Venables then did mostly use three at the back but people are assuming that just because he’s back in the England set-up he’s behind the move to 3-5-2 for the Croatia game. Not likely. McClaren will use three central defenders against Croatia: Rio Fredinand, Jamie Carragher, and John Terry, with Gary Neville and Ashley Cole out wide.

Venables' three-man defense was more offensive built on one central defender, Tony Adams, working in tandem with two fullbacks, Gary Neville and Stuart Pearce. Steve McManaman and Darren Anderton floated on the wings.

Venables reflected on Euro ‘96 in his autobiography ‘The Best Game in the World’, and the passages within are a revealing insight into the tactics he used: “… I began to wonder… whether we could come up with something different… just to throw the opposition a bit”.

Essentially Venables was striving for more variety in England’s play, with opponents believing England could only play 4-4-2.

Venables' solution was to try Ajax’s system, the team who had recently won the Champions League with three at the back: “… Christmas 1995 came the final step. It was to introduce the sort of back three favored by Ajax. That is to say, a central defender flanked tightly by two full backs.”

Mark Wright was the player earmarked by Venables as the middleman of the three defenders but when Wright got injured, Adams stepped in to do the job.

you could give them names like speedy gonzales, road runner, rocketeer,or even pizza express, it wont make a scrap of difference, personally i would name them all "pepe le phew" as everyone of them had a stinker.

Don't know which Rooney you've been watching, the one I saw was fantastic...

Gary Neville is finished as an international player. He lacks pace and is becoming a liability at the back.

Looking at the next wave of rightbacks coming through though worries me. We have no decent players who can handle or hold down a rightback place for England.

Other than a leggy Neville who do we have?

His ugly brother who too is crap, Glen Johnson who is good going forward but useless at defending, Luke young who is a decent prem player but that's about iterm

I have a suggestion and possibly a solution to this problem.

How about playing Gerrard at rightback with either Lennon or SWP ahead of him.

Gerrard started out as a rightback and knows the position well. He can defend and certainly bomb forward and crosses the ball well.

Gerrard played two blinders in this position against Argentina and Milan in the champions league so he can definitely play this position against decent opposition.

People will moan about Gerrard's more restricted role here but he is afterall a victim of his own versatility and will never play centre midfield too often for both club and country which he prefers.

At least he will finally cement a position as his own and help keep a solid back four in place for his nation.

The team will look like this.

.............Robinson

Gerrard...Ferdinand..Terry...A.Cole

............Hargreaves

Lennon/Swp...................J.Cole

.........Rooney.....Lampard........

..............Crouch

This lineup has pace, creativity and looks more solid, especially at the back and on the flanks.

Surely this should be done by McClaren.ok

I like the Xmas tree but my personnel would be:

G.Neville-Ferdinand-King-A.Cole
Beckham-Hargreaves-Gerrard
Rooney-J.Cole
A.Johnson

He did play ok but saves he made r ones he should make, any keeper should were not world class saves. Also for 1st goal in build up on 1st cross should have caught it no one around him and punched it, this then led to 2 more crooses which they scored from last 1 if caught it ball would be in there half no goal.

Logic, there's no justification in putting Gerrard as Right back. Those 2 games you mentioned were basically times where he had to do a fill-in job.

Putting him there on a full-time basis and he'll be soon found out. We've talked about Gerrard's tactical indiscipline before, I could easily forsee him being caught stranded upfield while an opposition attacker is attacking down his side of the field. Gerrard one of the best dynamic attacking players around and you're suggesting RB?

Illogical.

Neville has to be dropped true but Micah Richards is the prime candidate to take his place. A very modern full-back - strong, attack-minded, aggressive. Picture perfect

He did it very effectively as well. Gerrard knows the position well for he began his career as a right back. He also has the energy to get up and down the flank and can knock through some tidy balls for either Lennon or SWP whose pace will terrorise opposition.

That is logical.

He is not unfamiliar with this role in the team and when asked to play right back he has done so extremely well. He also likes hitting shots from distance and crosses the ball well. From right back he can do just this and we hear so much how good he is at tracking runners, so surely he will excel at right back. Gerrard has played many games for England and Liverpool in the attacking midfield role where occasionally he has performed well. The problem is as you have already suggested his positional awareness in the centre is shocking at times and he lacks discipline in this role. I feel right back would do wonders for both himself and England. Just my opinion.

As for Micah Richards, he is an upcoming talent but to throw him into the England team without experience at this level is more illogical than using Gerrard surely?

At least we agree that Neville is past his best.
