Yes people

In July, L Double and the 1Xtra drum and bass massive are coming live from Los Angeles for two live shows!

Before we arrive, we wanna hear from anyone who's either living in LA, or can tell us what's going down DnB wise in the City of Angels. If you're a producer, MC, promoter based in LA, or whatever, we want you to give us a brief, 50 word description of the drum and bass scene in LA, with the main players, labels and clubs in your opinions - the best could get published on the site.

L will be bringing you a show from Temple of Boom records, as well as a huge 1Xtra Live session from the Vanguard on Hollywood Blvd with none other than Adam F and Total Science. It's gonna be huge. Stay locked for more info.

peace out!

Cannot believe that 1Xtra is finally blessing the golden state with some dnb pressure.

After a brief pause around 01’ following a shooting at our ex-weekly (Databass),
the dnb scene in LA has never been stronger and safer. We now have two amazing weeklies (Bassrush Function and Respect) with world class talent rolling through with their fresh records and dubs to give us amazing sets. From what I hear, they all love the vibes from our crowds even though shows take place on a weekday. It feels amazing to be able to see world class talent at a weekly club instead of having to spend half a day and a pretty penny at a massive. We are truly blessed and spoiled to have our scene explode and bring attention to our ever-growing scene.

just a question to the people of the us .....

has there been many problems with violence/bad vibes in dnb clubs in the us ? for a long time dnb clubs had a stereo type of been moody places with lots of violence in the uk ...thankfully these days ,the scene in general over here is pretty damn good, which has brought girls back in the clubs a lot more ..much more friendlier atmospheres ...dont get me wrong the general scene wernt that bad ..its just there were always different problems kicking up here and there at different clubs.....if you asked most people about 5 years ago (espeically non dnb heads) they were convinced there was gona be trouble if they went to a dnb night.....
my worst experience at a club was at "desire" island ,illford...where i saw some 1 get stabbed .....but i spose this happens every where

See DnB in LA and USA in general, is more like an Art show then a Club. People in the LA scene have more of an elitist attitude. Like, because they like/ listen to DnB their brains are on a higher level then the average music listener. You especially get that in the DnB production scene.

Another problem is tagging at venues. Venues in the nicer parts of town have blacklisted allot of DnB events because of the tagging that comes with the crowd. This causes the scene to push deeper into the shady parts of skid row.

Smoking has been banned in all indoor areas in California. This has spanwed a rather lively, outdoor patio smoke scene. Now since all the clubs are in the shady parts of town, you have massive amounts of people hanging out on the streets where gang bangers and trouble makers are mixing with the crowd causing even more trouble.

Like all other dance musics genres in the USA... DnB is going the way of the dodo bird.

tagging= graffiti

But I'm not talking big Murals, like you see on New York subways. I am talking about people who scribble their names with paint markers. It started as gang members marking their territory on street corners, then moved on to kids marking up all the venus with their name.

oh of course, I knew it meant graf signatures, I know all about the real hip hop but I assumed you meant something else 'cause I wouldnt normally associate graf with clubs. I've never noticed anyone bringing pens to clubs here in the UK.

Hmmmmm........
Granted, arrogance will be found amongst the "elite" in any genre. But, unlike that poor creature you mentioned, D&B is very much alive, and thriving in Cali.
As for skidrow,I've been to a couple of 'one-offs' near there, but I've also had box seats at the Staple Center.
The weekly D&B joints are in Hollywood and Larchmont Village (well-chill and a good distance from S.R.).
Tagging?
With or without music, how long has that been an issue in "Metropolis"?
Don't hate cause you don't relate. It's cool!
D&B is loud, heavy, progressive, bold, independant and unappollogetic.
Muliti- faceted and politically incorrect, moving at the speed of life.
And, in America....it's underground. Without T.V. or radio play, running on it's own merit.

The 'underground", by definition, tipically resonates within a younger minority with an alternate and often progressive and or rebelious perspective.
It also appeals to those who may have no concrete perspective except a distaste for the status-quo. (Fitting, more now than ever I'd say).
Whatever the reason, D&B fans are true.
BBC 1Xtra's reception in one the biggest and best rooms in LA last night was vibrant, packed and peacefull.
I can't tell you how many main-stream events I've attended that couldn't pull those numbers.

As a matter of fact I now live in the orlando area. But a friend of mine is getting married . So I'm going back to LA for bachelor/Bachelorette party at where else RESPECT!!We will be 35-45 of us deep there!!! I can't wait!! I now get my weekly dnb from 1xtra dnb!!thanx all!!

DnB is BIG in LA - and dont worry there's nuff Jump Up Junglists to balance out the bourgi artcore crew.

Have a good one - and stop by the Temple Bar in Santa Monica if you want some chilled eclectic vibes.

Politically incorrect? What does that mean exactly in this context chinadoll?

Rebellious? Like Fresh being "rebellious" on Groove's show by selling/marketing/plugging his web site on a non commercial radio station?

About as rebellious as me wiping my arse with the Sun newspaper.

I just wanna big up all the LA crew who made 1Xtra so welcome in our short stay in the City of Angeles!

D&B us running deep over there, I have to say I was suprised. There are club events every nite in and around the LA area, with names like SHy, Mampi Swift, A.I., Fresh and many more of the big UK names all appearing in the next few weeks.

The D&B heads are up to the time on the UK scene, the music is available and to be honest the best thing about the scene was the divercity of the audience! White, black, hispanic, male, female, rock, emo, hip hop, electro all were representing and at the Vangurad club the girls looked especially fly!!!

If you want a D&B holiday, I seriously suggest visiting LA, seek out the Temple of Boom record store and you will know what's going on, ask for Sam or Hazzen and say 1Xtra sent you!

Check out all the details on the 1Xtra USA site
www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/...

Oh and Eco, its real easy to belittle the idea of D&B being underground in the US, but when you listen to the media outlets such as TV & Radio in the states you realize that no channel would even dream of playing a D&B tune day or night, there is no 1Xtra or equivilant in the USA. Therefore it IS underground in USA, and reminisiant of the early days here in the UK when you had to search out the raves, tunes and other D&B fans.

I take my hat of to the US guys who are supporting a truely UK sound and expanding the oppurtunities for UK DJ's & MC's to travel the world spreading the world!

So do I Dave....I'm not belittling the scene for being underground in any way.

If you read my questions, I was asking chinadoll to elaborate on the terms 'politically incorrect' and 'rebellious' as it all sounds a bit MTV lite to me.

As does the expression - "the girls looked especially fly!!!"

I was on an East London college campus in the late 80's when being politically correct was drummed into you and became a badge of honour and was based on the fundamental principles of equality. This was before the right wing press turned it into a joke.

The whole PC movement was to raise consciousness about social conditioning and deep seated prejudices. Some took it too far so it became easy to belittle but the essence of it is sound imo.

When you look at threads like 'lol bosseye' & 'Schwing!', it makes you realise those ideals are even more important than ever.

It's just all very shallow & superficial and doesn't relate to how I feel about d&b which is anything but.

It doesn't mean that you have to be self-righteous & po faced about it. Dave Darkside is the funniest poster on this board and he's as PC as they come.

While I'm at it, let me ask you about the 1xtra night at Innovation. Didn't it cross your mind to take Flight as one of the djs? Didn't you notice that out of 40+ performers there was only one woman? Instead, we had the 'girls' holding the fort at Movement while the boys played out in Spain.

The point is that you're in a position to do something about it.

I'm not having a pop because I think you're one of the best people behind the scene but don't begrudge ppl asking some of the more awkward questions because they need to be asked.
