Take
a gentle walk through the wooded grounds of Saltram House near Plymouth.
BBC Radio Devon's Pippa Quelch took a circular trail through the park
and along the banks of the River Plym.

The National
Trust's Saltram House is a magnificent Georgian mansion overlooking
the Plym estuary.
It was built in the middle of the 18th century, incorporating parts
of a Tudor house that was already on the site.
The house is set in beautiful gardens and is surrounded by landscaped
parkland.
You can enjoy walks through the park, woodlands and beside the river.
Highlights include follies, an orangery, ancient trees and flowering
shrubs. In the grounds is the Chapel Art Gallery, a restored 19th
century chapel that now hosts regular art exhibitions during the summer
months.

We suggest
you explore the parkland and discover the walk that best suits you.
You may recognise Saltram House from the silver screen! Saltram was
Norland Park in the film adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility
starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslett, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman.
Radio Devon's Pippa Quelch chose a circular walk anticlockwise around
Saltram House, starting at the main car park and following the woodland
trail down to the Plym estuary.
The riverside path heads towards Chelson Meadow, and then along the
estate's private road back to the house.

| Pippa
Quelch sets off on her walk around Saltram. |
It took
about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. If you want a long, strenuous
hike, this isn't the place for you!
The terrain is largely concrete paths or roads, and woodland gravel
or mud paths.
Sometimes after heavy rain some parts could be a bit muddy, depending
on where you choose to walk.
Many walks within the park are suitable for wheelchair users, pushchairs
and bicycles. Dogs are permitted, but need to be kept on a lead in
certain parts of the parkland where animals may be grazing.
Pippa's Tip: The grounds are open all the year round so you
are always allowed into the park to walk, if not to visit Saltram
House itself.
During the busy tourist months it's possible you may be charged to
enter the park at a toll booth just beyond the entrance gate.
To avoid the charge (if you don't want to visit the house) you can
park in the 'Dog Walkers Car Park' which is on the right, just inside
the entrance gate.
