With two coastlines, north and south, it's little wonder that Devon has provided more than its fair share of seafaring heroes, world class yachtsmen, and daredevil explorers.

Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh, Captain Scott, Francis Chichester...the list goes on and on.

Bringing us bang up to date, we now have ocean rower Simon Chalk and yacht racer Conrad Humphreys.

Britain - and Devon especially - has an unrivaled maritime history, and the sea continues to play a huge role in our everyday lives.

The sea's contribution to Devon's economy is hard to quantify.

But when you take in the fishing industry, the Royal Navy's links with Devon, and tourism, you get an idea of the importance of the sea to the county.

So it's no surprise that Devon is playing a big part in this year's Sea Britain 2005 festival.

It's a national celebration, looking at every aspect of our maritime history.

It's hoped it will also encourage more people to get out and about and enjoy our coast.

Resorts and ports along Devon's two coastlines are holding special events as part of Sea Britain 2005, and annual events such as regattas are also being incorporated into the festival.
