Tretherras New British School Champions

Cornwall's Tretherras School are the new British champions

Cornwall's Tretherras School are the new British champions after a superb team performance in the finals at Woolacombe, in North Devon.

The Newquay facility outpointed defending champions Richard Lander School at the event. Bideford joined the Truro squad in equal second place.

Luke Parkhouse took the u-18 title from last year's winner Johnny Fryer in choppy 4-6ft waves. Parkhouse impressed the judges with his mastery of the tricky wave conditions.

The outgoing tide did not dampen Christian Swanson's enthusiasm, winning a keenly fought u-16 final against Jordon Reed.

Sophie Hellyer is the new British Girl's champion after turning in a performance worthy of winner. Georgeham's Kathleen Spear was the runner up.

Truro's Cheech Fleck was forced to give up his U16 bodyboard title, finishing second behind Alex Hickman.

Bude's Ruebyn Ash did not defend his under-14 title as he was surfing in France.

Contest Director Dave Reed told BBC Devon Online the standard of the competition was impressive: "The conditions weren't ideal and there was some pretty big surf around at times. But everyone who took part did their bit in making it a very enjoyable contest. We aim to be back in Woolacombe again next year."
