Edward Genochio, from Exeter, is about to pedal off on a solo 12,000-mile
cycle from Exeter to Shanghai.
Here's the first of his regular diary entries along the route. This
first one comes from his home in Topsham just days before he's due
to set off. |

It’s
Monday 1st March, and I ought to be on my way to China by now.
I’ve had 28th February pencilled in as my departure date, but I’m
still at home in Exeter sorting out last-minute preparations.
I was a bit nervous about delaying my departure until after the
28th, because it’s a leap year and we all know what 29th February
means for commitment-shy young men…!

In
the end my girlfriend, Emily, said she’d give me another four years,
but if I haven’t mentioned the M-word by the time the next 29th
February comes around in 2008 then I’d better watch out!
The last few days of packing have been quite stressful, probably
more for Emily than for me because she has to grin and bear it while
I’m flapping around the house swearing at the box of spare inner
tubes which I’ve lost for the 17th time today.
Well, on Wednesday I will finally be off, after nearly 12 months
of planning.
I’m going to miss Emily so much, that will probably be the hardest
part of the ride. On the positive side, it will be good to be on
the road at last, with Shanghai getting a little nearer with every
turn of the pedals.
Next stop: Dover.
