Former Beatle
Sir Paul McCartney is among a number of celebrities who have donated
handpainted postcards to an exhibition and auction being held in
Devon.
In all, 240
postcard-sized pieces of art are being exhibited at the Exeter Pheonix
Arts Centre, to raise funds for the South West Academy of Fine and
Applied Arts, which is based in the city.
The exhibition
is between November 16th and December 8th, when the postcards are
to be auctioned at the arts centre.
The fund-raising
initiative was the brainchild of artist, Alan Cotton. He posted
9inch x 6inch water-colour cards to scores of well known artists,
who sent them back in the post - with their artistic offerings on
the front.

Actor
Art Malik

Among those
who took up the challenge was actor Art Malik, who admitted he does
not usually dabble in art, Rolf Harris, John Miller and Sir Terry
Frost. But it is the sketch by Sir Paul - called Mr Goya's Famous
Candle Hat - which has aroused most interest and could sell for
as much as £1,000.
Vice-president
of the academy, Jentian Sims, said: "We sent the postcards
out with stamps on them, and they've come back through the post,
with the drawings on the front.
"It is
a tribute to the British postal system that they have arrived back
in such good condition. The textile artist, Mary Sumner, sewed through
the card, and even that has arrived in wonderful condition."
The academy
is a registered charity, and relies on donations and fund-raising.
It promotes exhibitions for local artists, and in the spring, is
staging a childrens' exhibition.
Jentian said:
"We felt this postcard idea would be a splendid opportunity
to show original art and raise some money as well." For details
