Chinchilla owners
from across the country will be gathering in Plymouth this month,
for the first ever national convention for the creatures.
The fluffy animals
- often mistaken for rabbits - originate from South America, but
are becoming more and more popular as pets.

The convention,
being staged at the Novotel at Marsh Mills, is the brainchild of
local man, Roger Whear. He has set up a website, and says the idea
behind the get-together is to discuss how best to care for their
pets.
Specialist vets
will be attending, including BBC Radio Devon's vet, John Bower.
Roger acquired his first chinchilla 10 years ago....and he has had
them ever since. He said:"I've got seven now - and that's it
- I'm
not getting any more."
He added:"They
make lovely pets. They don't smell, they don't have lice or fleas,
and they can live for up to 20 years."
He is hoping
that if this year's event is a big success, then it could become
an annual event. Already, owners have booked up from all four corners
of Britain.
The convention
is 7pm to 11pm on October 16th, with a £5 admission fee. Anyone
who is interested should contact Roger on 01752 670374.
