Families call for more epilepsy services

Specialist nurses and facilities are being called
Specialist facilities are being called for

Devon families of young people who have died from epilepsy are calling on the health service to take the condition more seriously.

They want more resources directed to the treatment of epilepsy, including specialist nurses and doctors.

Around 1,000 people a year die in the UK as a result of epilepsy. But the charity Epilepsy Bereaved says that in adults 39% of deaths are avoidable, and in children as many as 59% could be avoided.

In Devon, families backing calls for more resources include Kathy Moyle, from East Budleigh, whose grandson, Matthew, died aged 17 last October as a result of an epileptic fit.

Also concerned is Mark Phillips, from Exeter, whose 15-year-old daughter died two years ago.

They both feel there should be a raising of awareness of the potential seriousness of epilepsy and also more specialist treatment available.
