A brand new children's animation series has just hit our television
screens and it has been made by a Devon company. Honeycomb productions,
based at Cullompton, created the new programme for the BBC.
'Binka' is the tale of a cat, a very large cat. He's been brought
to life using the labour intensive technique of animation, in a small
studio in Cullompton. The character was based on a real cat, a very
big Persian who managed to get his paws on just too many suppers.
Every second of Binka's tale is made up of 12 separate pictures, all
drawn by hand. It has taken a team of 17 a year to make the 26 five-minute
episodes. They are aimed at those perennial cat fans, pre-school children.

Simon Bor of Honeycomb
Animation says simplicity is the key to Binka's success: "They are
very simple stories and a very simple design and I think that is essential
for this age group. A lot of things that are on TV are very busy,
and these are quite gentle."
The new cat on the block is already proud to be endorsing a very necessary
kitty product - cat litter. Honeycomb Animation are now hoping Binka
brings in a fat cat salary. |
