Workers in Devonport will decide on Monday whether or not to take
industrial action over plans by the Ministry of Defence to part
privatise naval yards.
The Government
has announced that 750 jobs may go at Devonport, Portsmouth and
Faslane. A further 3,000 could see their jobs being switched to
private firms in a deal designed to cut costs by £300m over
the next five years.

Defence
workers at the submarine base at Faslane in Scotland have
chosen to strike
|
Thousands of
defence workers at Faslane have chosen to strike on Friday. Around
3,000 workers at the Scottish submarine base will go on strike,
although essential works will go ahead at the Trident nuclear submarine
base, and the nearby Coulport weapons depot so as not to risk the
operational effectiveness of the British fleet.
Leaders of six
unions met with defence minister Adam Ingram on Wednesday.
The national
officer of the union, TGWU, Jack Dromey, said some progress was
made on pay, conditions and pensions - but not enough to stop the
strike.
Privatisation
proposals will be submitted to the Commons Defence Committee and
Public Accounts Committee.
