The Marine Conservation Society is in Plymouth to launch a new scheme
to study the basking shark.

The television
star of prgrammes such as Callan and the Equaliser, who lives in the
area, admits he's a fan of the basking shark. He'll be be joined by
a nine metre inflatable of the fish at the launch of the Basking Shark
Watch Scheme.
The fish is the second largest in the world and can measure up to
11m and weigh up to seven tonnes. Very little is known about basking
sharks but experts fear they may be in decline.

This year's scheme
is being funded by the Interantional Fund for Animal Welfare.
The scheme was first started in 1987 and since then there have been
more than 13,000 sightings. |
