Skills shortage in electronics industry

Staff are hard to find in the electronics industry
Devon's electronics industry faces a recruitment crisis which could hold back future growth. A new report highlights companies across the region are struggling because of a shortage of skills, research and development.

The survey, completed by the accountants KPMG shows how the electronic industry is coming under increasing pressure and needs to change dramatically.

The 'Electronics in Focus' report highlights areas where the accountancy firm believes electronic industries are failing. In recent months firms in the county have begun to come under pressure from the decline in the global market.

Future expansion may be held back
KPMG recommends local businesses in Devon strive to forge links with the Government and educational organisations in order to keep afloat. The firm says there are three weaknesses within electronics companies at the moment.

A shortage of skills is the major factor, while research and development needs more attention. Finally working with the Government and educational establishments could improve public awareness, while altering peoples perceptions of the industry.
