A South West
train operator has come under pressure on Saturday to improve and
update services.
The managing
director of Wessex Trains, Charles Belcher, spoke at the Annual
General Meeting of Railfuture South West, an independent rail watchdog
group.
The group says
it is looking for a number of commitments from the company, including
a more evenly spaced timetable.
In the short-term,
it would like to see a better timetable and greater integration
between Wessex Trains and other train companies in the region.

A
new cross-country timetable is coming into effect in October
|
In the long-term,
it will be asking for improvements to some of the older rolling
stock and better integration with bus services.
But, on the
whole, Railfuture says it is reasonably satisfied with Wessex Trains,
and it is not judged the worst operator in the region.
Charles Belcher
said 2002 will be a watershed year for the industry.
He said: "In
October, there's a new cross-country timetable coming into being,
and what we're doing at the moment is working with local authorities
and the interested parties to see how we can get as close as we
can to a proper integrated timetable of all operators, rather than
one operator doing one thing and one operator doing another."
