An organisation helping to treat domestic violence offenders in
the South West says it's receiving more calls than it can deal with.
Ahimsa, based
in Plymouth, also offers help and support to victims of domestic
violence in Devon and Cornwall.
Ahimsa began
its work 12 years ago. The centre offers counselling to men who've
physicalled abused their partners. Many contact the service personally
appealing for help, while others are referred by the police or other
agencies.
The centre,
named after Ghandi's word for 'non-violence', offers correctional
behaviour programmes for men from across Devon. But staff say they've
noticed increasing demand for their services.
The centre's
director, Calvin Bell, will today tell a meeting in Bristol that
more needs to be done to tackle the problem of domestic violence
and bullying in the South West.
Supporters of
the Ahimsa project believe much more investment is required if the
centre's work is to continue.
