River Exe wildlife cruises come of age
The Exe Estuary
The Exe Estuary - Home to hundreds of Avocets
The RSPB is holding its second in a series of Avocet Cruises in East Devon today.

It is a chance for people to see more of the wading birds.

If you're taking one of the Avocet cruises we'd love to see any photos you take. Email your .jpgs to devon.online@bbc.co.uk

Today's cruise gets underway at 1pm. The first trip this year took place yesterday when the commentator on board was the BBC wildlife expert Nick Baker.

Nick - who started his broadcasting career at BBC Radio Devon - says he gets as great an adrenaline buzz from seeing hundreds of avocets wading in the low tide on the River Exe, as he does coming face to face with grizzly bears in the wild.

This is the 21st year in succession that the RSPB has run its watching cruises.

Up to 600 birds - which is 40 per cent of the British wintering population - are expected and their distinctive feeding action sweeping their beaks from side to side in the water makes them a familiar site.
