The Prince of
Wales has warned of the security implications in these "dangerous
times" of relying on the world market for food.
Urging supermarkets
to buy more local produce, he said it would be "utter madness" to
sacrifice national security by purchasing food from abroad just
because it was more convenient.

Prince Charles
told a food industry gathering at St James' Palace that supermarkets
should play a greater role in supporting small rural food producers.
He was launching
a practical guide designed to help rural businesses sell their goods
to larger retailers.
He said: "I
happen to believe this country must retain its ability to grow its
own food.
"All too many
people think that we can survive by relying totally on the world
market. But
we must learn the lessons of history - now, it seems to me in these
currently dangerous times, more than ever.
"To sacrifice
long-term security for short-term convenience would be utter madness,
it seems to me."
It is the latest
in a series of addresses made by the Prince this year, in support
of the rural community.
