But the exhibition of Paula Rego's etchings and lithographs spanning over 20 years at the Brook in Budleigh Salterton is just the latest in a long line of world-class artists whose work has been exhibited in the seaside town. Angela Yarwood who owns the gallery says getting quality work like that of Sir Peter Blake, Salvador Dali and Kandinsky to Devon is her passion. "We also exhibit local artists' work too and it's pretty exciting for them to have their work shown alongside world-renowned artists," said Angela. Since taking over the gallery two years ago she has continually strived to bring work of significance to her corner of Devon. ![]() The gallery has been open for 12 years "We did think about diversifying but the reputation we have is for being one of the best galleries in the country exhibiting limited edition original prints so we decided to keep doing that. "It's great that people from Devon don't have to hop on a train to London to see work of significance, they only have to come to Budleigh Salterton." A background in IT sales and marketing may not immediately seem a likely training for running an art gallery, but Angela thinks it is. "Funnily enough there is quite a connection between the two things, I certainly have to be persuasive. "It's a slog and we are always looking a year in advance but it's what I really love doing." And while admitting to having limited artistic ability herself she says running the gallery is an outlet for her other creative skills. ![]() The Rego exhibition opens on 12 July 2009 "I think of the titles for exhibitions and work out how it's all going to look in the gallery so that is my creative input and that's the part I really enjoy." So does she have a wish list for future work she would like to see on the gallery walls? "Well the one I would really love I already have! It's a Damien Hirst skull print made with diamond dust, it is such a statement piece. "I would really love to show some work by Tracey Emin and I'm working on that." And she happily admits that owning a gallery is, for her, a bit like a chocolate addict working in a sweet shop. "Sometimes I can't bear the thought that somebody will actually buy - and take away - a print that I've got an attachment to. Not a good trait for a gallery owner!" "And will I be able to resist buying a Paula Rego print? I'm not sure!" Paula Rego: The Ultimate Story Teller |
