Panto noticeboard

Wherever you are in Devon, you can let the world know all about your local panto this Christmas, by using our very useful panto noticeboard - oh yes it is!

Pantomania has broken out in towns and villages all over Devon - and you can let everyone know about your local performance by posting the details on the noticeboard at the bottom of this page.

From Croyde Bay to Torbay, and from Lympstone to Leusdon, local people are taking part in the 2008 pantomime season.

From November until February, village halls and local community centres see local people dress up and perform in pantomime. Local shows are characterised by people you know playing characters you soon get to know.

In Slapton, the vicar takes to the stage, and in Torquay, teachers tread the boards.

The New Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Shiphay A.D.S

Ahoy there! Shiphay's Robinson Crusoe panto

The stories are often familiar with local dramatic societies choosing scripts based on popular fairy stories. Totnes' Jack will grow a beanstalk this year, Croyde will put the puss back into boots and Aladdin will be helping Widow Twanky with the washing in both Paignton and Teignmouth.

Local pantos also try to push the boat out. In Torquay, Robinson Crusoe waits for his ship on the Shiphay stage and Dawlish invites Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves in the Shaftesbury Theatre.

In Slapton, the village's re-interpretation of Aladdin - A Lad in a Hole - features the local cricket club...as belly dancers of course.

For some, the traditional panto is about writing a new one. In Exeter, the Cygnet Drama School stages its first ever pantomime - Dick Whittington and his cat Ron. Written and directed by Mark Carey, this show finally gives Dick's cat a name. Hurray!

In Dartmouth, writer Linda Cunningham will be playing the villain in her own script of Sleeping Beauty. Boo! Hiss! But the beauty will also awake to the songs composed especially for the show. Hurray!

If you are performing a local panto this year, we'd like to hear from you. Oh yes we would! Just use the messageboard form below.

Further to my brief note before Christmas I can now give you more details of Dracula the Panto a novel and ingenious production which the Shaldon Theatre Company will be performing at the Carlton Theatre Teignmouth from the 27th January (Tuesday) to the 31st January (Saturday) - 5 nights at 7.30 pm each night. Plus a matinee on Saturday 31st at 2.30 pm.Tickets £7 (adults) £3.50 children. Theatre Company Chairman Sandra Surgenor says "If you want to see a really hilarious show then book your seats early. Dracula sounds a bit different from your usual panto, and it is!, although it still has all the ingredients of a traditional show"Director and Choreographer Tracey Davies, is clearly excited to have secured many of the actors who appeared in the highly successful October production of "Oliver" at the Princess Theatre, Torquay. Tracey told us"Count Dracula (Gary Abraham) is looking for a new bride to join his three "old ones". He chooses the young and innocent Sonia (Naomi Ballman) but is thwarted by Garlic, the Fairy Queen (Nicola Samuel - Stevens) and almost ends up marrying his own werewolf! (Shelley Surgenor) - or worst still Sonia's mother Dame Rosie Glow (Steve Collings)" That's about as much of the plot that Tracey is prepared to divulge! However she is delighted to have such an excellent cast of singers and dancers to support the principals, and to be working with Daniel Saint as Musical Director. The whole Company are confident that a "Spectacular Dracula" is awaiting their audiences.I've just been advised that Saturday's production is a sell-out and tickets are selling well for the other days.

Once again, Ilfracombe demonstrates that it can celebrate Christmas like no other town in the land as the cast of Small Pond Productions' festive show sing out: 'It's Christmaaas' at the Landmark Theatre on Friday 19th & Saturday 20th December at 8.00pm. No other Christmas show can boast of a specially recorded speech by Her Majesty The Queen to the town's residents. What does Her Majesty think of Ilfracombe? What did Prince Edward report back from his recent visit? You'll have to be there to find out. As well as live singing, dancing and comedy on the Landmark stage, this year's show features humorous interviews with some typical Ilfracombe residents on what they like about Christmas, filmed on location around the town. Isn't that an ugly sister in the High Street? Add to this live comedy, the energy of the young dancers performing their dance routines on stage, and soloists and chorus singing a range of old and new Christmas songs, and we've got a great show to kick off everyone's Christmas in style. The audience can sing alone to Victorian carols including 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen', 'In the Bleak Midwinter' and 'Silent Night', as well as enjoying seasonal songs from the Bing Crosby era plus recent Christmas songs - there's something for everyone. It's the show to get the whole family singing along to favourite Christmas songs and carols, and laughing at hilarious comedy. After all, It's Christmaaas! Tickets £9 or family ticket £32.00.
