Sing Christmas

Were you part of one of the biggest ever Christmas services held in the South West? People gathered at local cafés, village halls and pubs, others joined in at home in front of the fire, to Sing Christmas. Watch the video.

---------------------------------

Thousands of people joined us on Monday 22 December for one of the biggest Christmas carol services the South West has ever seen.

"Sing Christmas" was an interactive community service which brought together congregations gathered in pubs, clubs, residential homes, cafés and places of work in one big service.

Christmas Tree

People even gathered around their village tree

Everyone was invited to tune their radios or log on to the BBC websites, sing the same carols and listen to the Christmas story unfold.

The main service was held at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall from 8pm and relayed to BBC Local Radio across the South West.

It was also broadcast on The Big Screen in Plymouth city centre - where a Salvation Army band played along - and on the four local BBC websites.

We had people taking part in Devon, Cornwall, Jersey, Guernsey, the USA, Canada, Belfast and even New Zealand where former 'Devon Maid', Janet Pugh, joined in after cooking breakfasts for her guests at her B+B in The Bay Of Islands.

If you missed the fun, don't worry, you can watch the video by clicking on the link at the top of this page.

There was music, lots of well known carols, special guests and a unique interactive element - all about the real meaning of Christmas and we're hoping to do it all again - even bigger and better - next year!

Happy Christmas to everyone who took part!

We had a wonderful time at the Stoke Arms in Exeter - around 50 of all ages enjoyed the singing and the activities. It was a great mix of good pub atmosphere and carol service. Many thanks to all who organised Sing Christmas - it was a good mix of carols, interviews and activities and I hope you will repeat it next year! It definitely attracted some who would not have gone to a church-based carol service.

We are in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. My daughter and son-in-law are currently visiting us with their children from Plymouth. We took part in sing Christmas and it was fantastic. It was great to take a break in our busy preparations for Christmas to reflect on the true meaining of Christmas - the Son of God coming to earth. In the midst of a lot of snow that we have here it was great to join with you. Please do it again and we will involve more of our local community in it.

Just like to say what a great idea Sing Christmas was. I attended the event at the Big Screen in Armada Way, Plymouth. Although there was not a huge crowd it showed that there may be an appetite for such an event. There were obviously some technical and/or editorial issues that hopefully can be addressed to make the event more effective next year. I don't usually contact you about events but I feel that this was such a great idea and hope that it will be repeated with improvements.
