Memo performing live

Memo are a duo comprising South Devon musicians Russ Bray and Luke Bond. Here, they audition their song, Sleepless Surrender, which they wrote in a cave on Torquay's Meadfoot Beach.

Q: Tell us about Memo.
A: We are Russ Bray, 22, from Paignton, on vocals and guitar; and Luke Bond, 22, from Dawlish, on vocals, guitar and programming. We've been friends since secondary school, and after playing in separate bands, we linked together to develop our own songs. We co-write our songs. We were named Torbay's 'Best Contemporary Band' at the Artsbase Awards 2007. We intend to head out onto the road with a full band.

Q: Which three words best describe your music?
A: Decide For Yourselves.

Q: Whose records do you have in your collections, and who have you been influenced by?
A: Too numerous to list - basically, the history of music!

Q: Tell us about the track you are auditioning.
A: It's called Sleepless Surrender, and it was written in a cave at Meadfoot Beach in Torquay. It was recorded in the living room of a shared 'party house' we called The Womb. Also recording with us was bassist Steve Taylor and Devon-based starlets, NUMB. The song is about, if anything at all, the connections between love, loneliness, empathy and insomnia. Or perhaps just the babble of a very wasted fellow sat in a dark, cold cave with a melody in mind.

Q: Complete the sentence: "When we become famous..."
A: We'll cross that bridge if we stumble upon it.

Q: In your own words: go on, sell yourself!
A: We'll leave that to the music.
