Nicky Swann

Nicky Swann

Solo acoustic artist Nicky Swann is a singer songwriter from South Devon. Her vocals blend blues, jazz and soul. Listen to her demo track here.

Q: Are you purely a solo act then, Nicky?
A: No not really, having jammed my material with my brother, Mikey, lead guitarist for many years, I knew that I had some good songs and went in search of a bassist and drummer. After travelling through foreign lands, over desert and forest, I eventually caught up with Lee (bass) in Torquay and James (drums) in Totnes!

Q: What made you start writing your own songs?
A: I was once forced to go to a Showaddywaddy gig as a small child and was inspired to write better music!

Nicky writes much of her own material

Q: Do you now include Showaddywaddy's music in your record collection?
A: I've The Beatles (but who hasn't?), Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, Everything But The Girl, Blondie, Reef, Mansun, David Gray, Sheryl Crow, The Who and let's just say many, many more....!

Q: Tell us about your song "Wishing I Was Home"....
A: Wishing I Was Home was one of those songs that was written pretty quickly and instinctively. I think the lyrics speak for themselves really. It's about missing someone you love through working away - or for whatever reason - but letting them know you'd drop it all to help them out.

Q: What does the future hold?
A: I want to continue writing, maturing and enjoying the music. I'd like to work with others and mix some tracks to give a drum 'n' bass feel, to experiment as much as possible but to enjoy what I do.

Nicky describes her music as 'honest'

Q: What if you become famous....?
A: I would  pump some money back into the local economy, set up a studio and tap into the local talent here.

Q: What do you consider the best and worst thing about living in Devon?
A: I love the scenery and relaxed way of life, but it's so difficult to get gigs if you play original material.

Q: What words best describe your music?
A: Gorgeous! Essential! Honest!
