The soggy summer of 2007 may have proved disastrous for many producers, but for Nick Hewison, the wet weather has actually helped his crop of blueberries. Nick has 2.5 acres of land near Lustleigh on Dartmoor. At 600ft above sea level, blueberries might not seem the obvious choice of crop to grow. But the decision is starting to bear fruit - literally - for Nick and his brother Toby, who inherited the land when their parents died. Up until about 10 years ago, the land was full of Christmas trees, which their parents would sell to local people each Christmas. Then, their mother had the inspired idea to plant some blueberry bushes. The blueberry plot grew and grew, and now there is just one Christmas tree left - in memory of their parents - but there are thousands of blueberry bushes. Nick said: "The weather has been good for us. We've got enormous berries, and they're really tasty." Watch Nick's film which follows the growing season in the spring and summer of 2007. last updated: 26/07/07 SEE ALSOYou are in: Devon > Devon On Film > Film features > Blueberries bear fruit |
