Exeter Nightstop

A warm welcome

Nightstop is safe haven

Exeter Nightstop provides young homeless people with emergency accommodation in the homes of volunteer hosts - but more hosts are now needed.

Since 2001, Exeter Nightstop has provided emergency accommodation for young homeless people by placing them in the homes of local residents.

The volunteer hosts provide safe accommodation, an evening meal and breakfast for one night at a time.

In return, the hosts receive training, 24-hour support, and their expenses are paid.

Most of the young people who have been placed with hosts have gone on to find appropriate housing.

One 16-year-old who benefited said: "Nightstop is a nice place where you can feel safe and feel at home."

Youth homelessness is a problem in Exeter

There are currently 14 hosts, and more are desperately needed now that the project also covers East Devon, Teignbridge and Mid-Devon.

Exeter Nightstop - which is run by the charity, The Exeter Homeless Action Group - has put out an appeal for more hosts.

Co-ordinator Tina Grumbo said: "Youth homelessness is a bigger issue than people imagine.

"The number one reason people come to us - in fact, eight out of 10 people - is because of family breakdowns.

"The young people don't get on with a step-parent, or there may be mental health issues, or drug or alcohol issues.

"It's daunting for people to take in a young homeless person, but at the same time it's not daunting.

"The young person is seen and reviewed and no-one under the influence of drugs or alcohol is placed by Nightstop.

"Most of our hosts are single and female. So it's a trust thing - on both sides."

Would-be hosts should initially ring Nightstop for an informal chat. They are then sent an information pack and application form. That is followed by a series of home visits over a period of three months.

The project is receiving funding from local authorities and has also had grants from BBC Children in Need and the National Lottery.
