Sita and her calf

Help name the calf

The wait is finally over and it's time to start thinking of a name for Sita's new calf. That's where you can help.

BBC 1 Inside Out

Exclusive footage from the birth will be featured on BBC South West's Inside Out programme which has been following Sita's pregnancy.

The programme will be shown on BBC 1 in the South West on Friday 23 March at 7.30pm.

It will also be available to satellite viewers across the UK on channel 987.

Now the big day has finally arrived, everyone's thoughts have turned to naming the baby rhino.

The new arrival is a female and Paignton Zoo is looking for an African-influenced name.

This is where you come in. The zoo is open to suggestions from the hundreds of Sita followers across the world.

The name will be chosen by the rhino keepers from the suggestions sent in.

Please don't call or e-mail the BBC, the zoo has set up the following address for people to use:

  • nametherhino@paigntonzoo.org.uk

Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling said: "Sita has become an internet star and we'd like her many fans to help name the new calf.

"I think the webcam has helped to raise awareness for rhino conservation and increased people's understanding of how zoos work to breed rare species.

"I'd like to thank everyone who has been following Sita's progress and who has sent messages of good will and support.

"It has been a long wait but it has been worth it!"
