It's something most young bands only dream of, but South Devon-based group Pull My Finger actually got the chance to record some of their songs in a two-day recording session. The four-piece band won a county-wide Battle of the Bands competition, beating off 17 other young groups for the right to spend two days at the Deep Blue Sound Recording Studios in Plymouth. The group are bassist Dom Helson, 16; Rhythm guitarist Aedan Jenner, 16; lead guitarist and vocalist Cosmo Jarvis, 17; and drummer Fletcher Jarvis, 14. All are from the Totnes/Holbeton areas of the South Hams.

They have created a unique sound which is all of their own - a blend of styles from hard rock and slash to mellow Jewish folk-influenced ballads with a jazz-reggae-funk fusion overlay. There's even a hint of Russian music thrown in as well. Cosmo, who writes all the songs, relished the opportunity to record their tracks. "It's really good to be able to do this," he said. "We've never been in a recording studio before, so it's all a learning process. "Maybe it's the first step for us." The recording sessions enabled the band to put together a CD of four of their songs which they hope to sell. The four songs - Spaceman, Betty, Kings and Queens, and Jessica Alba - can be heard by clicking on the links on this page. And Dom believes this could kick-start their musical careers: "Well, we've already won the Battle of the Bands which took some doing, and we want to carry that on." The lads are also hoping to get more live gigs lined up. They've played at clubs, parties, schools, and at charity events but are looking for more opportunities. The Battle of the Bands was organised by Devon County Council's Youth Service. As well as winning two days in the recording studio, the group has also won £300 of musical equipment of their choice from Sound Pad in Torquay. * Listen to Pull My Finger's four tracks using the links on this page. |
