The South Devon Players are a new theatre company that has started up in Torbay for local actors and performances.
We were born in the new year of 2006, from the general idea 'wouldn’t it be nice to…' and four Brixham residents (Laura Jury, Gordon Smith, Annette Grose, and Louise German) set about making the company a reality.
We were quickly joined by several other members from Torbay and the South Hams and have grown steadily since then.
We are presently rehearsing weekly at Brixham British Legion club, for the first show, a semi-comic historical drama, written by the group members.
The play is about a true event that took place in Totnes and Berry Pomeroy in 1699, a scandal, involving the local vicar, Reverend John Prince...!
Prince is most well known for his book, published in 1701, The Worthies Of Devon, a book about notable 'characters' living in Devon.

Less known is the fact that he, himself, could be quite easily added to the list.
On August 1st 1699, in Totnes, several local citizens, looking in at the window of an alehouse near the Royal Seven Stars, reported having seen him in an apparantly compromising position with an unmarried local woman named Mary Southcote.
Relatively little is known about this incident and the subsequent church investigation into the matter.
The witness statements from those who looked in at the alehouse windows were detailed in the small book "The Curious Sexual Adventure Of The Reverend John Prince" by Todd Gray.
The story has been made into a humourous stage production that while being a true story, will also be highly entertaining, starring local actors.
Our show dates are as follows:
Brixham British Legion, Bakers Hill, Off St Marys Square, Brixham
September 9th - 8pm
September 10th - 7.30pm
(entry by dontation to the Poppy Appeal on the door)
The Barrel House, Totnes
September 20th, 8pm - entry on door - £4 (£3 concs)
Berry Pomeroy Parish Church (show in aid of church funds)
October 11th - 7pm, entry on door. £4 (£3 concs)
The main aims of the group are to perform plays in the local area, both newly written material, and already performed scripts.
While we are, and intend on remaining, a small group, auditions will be listed on our website, as well as group news in general and there will be plenty of opportunity for new members to become involved.
Above all, it is vital that the members of the group enjoy the theatrical experience, as well as putting on a show for an audience to enjoy equally!
