A
group of British born Chinese young people has been learning how to
make films with the help of the Roots project.
They've put their skills into practice by filming other youngsters
making traditional Chinese lion heads and costumes. |

Seven
young Chinese children from Plymouth have been learning film and editing
skills as part of a joint scheme between the BBC and the Arts Council.
BBC Devon's Roots co-ordinator, Fiona Evans, spent a week training
the youngsters on how to use a video camera and desktop editing.

The
group spent their time filming other youngsters making traditional
Chinese lion heads and costumes to use at festivals like the Chinese
New Year.
During the week the children produced two films. One is a 10 minute
video which will be used in local schools to show others how to make
a lion themselves.
The second is a two minute feature for the BBC's regional news programme
Spotlight. Its broadcast coincides with the 30th anniversary of the
Devon and Cornwall Chinese Association. You can watch it by clicking
on the link at the top of this page.

Lorraine
Frances from the Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council was
impressed at the progress the young film-makers made in just one week.
"It was great to watch their increased confidence and professionalism
over the week," she said.
"By the end of it, it was though we had an experienced camera
crew present!"
The Yuen film school is ongoing and is currently recruiting new members.
