Hair Stylist

The Hair Stylist works to the Chief Hair and Make-up Artist. They cut, style, colour, straighten and wave hair to suit production requirements. They may be required to use chemical solutions and administer hair and scalp treatments as necessary. They will liaise closely with the actors, Director and production team to establish what hair effects are required at each stage of the production and discuss the best ways of producing those effects. They may also liaise with wigmakers to design and create hair pieces where required.

They are responsible for maintaining photographic and detailed records of the hair styles in each scene for continuity and reference purposes.

  • Budgeting and scheduling processes
  • Period and contemporary imagery and trends
  • Hairdressing cutting and styling techniques
  • Wig and facial hair construction, maintenance, dressing and application processes
  • Health and safety implications
  • An expansive knowledge of specialist suppliers, retail and hire sources

Career Path

The usual career route is an academic qualification equivalent to an NVQ in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, followed by a specialised media hair and make-up course and extensive practical experience and training in the industry
