Carpenter / Standby Carpenter

Carpenter

Scenic Carpenters work to the Construction Manager and Production Designer during pre-production processes. Once filming starts the Stand-By Carpenter works alongside the camera team and Stand-by Art Director to carry out adjustments and emergency repairs to the set and props. They are also required to help the grip lay tracking shots and move equipment around the set.

In pre-production they construct, erect, install and repair wooden structures and fittings used in internal and external sets. Predominantly using wood they are required to cut, shape, fit and assemble any scenery parts and dressing props, furniture, and decorative objects. In some instances they are called upon to craft and produce structures and props using alternative and unusual materials. Tasks include the manufacture and/or repair of scenery or props as specified in technical drawings, sketches or to specific instructions and pictorial reference. They may be called to make extensive or minor adjustments to existing buildings, on location in private homes.

They need to be proficient with the safe and proper use of hand and machine tools and to ensure areas of set are protected, work areas clear and tools safely stored and maintained.
