8th April was a memorable date for some of the pupils from St Martin's
school, as they were included in an outside broadcast for The Shane
O'Connor show on BBC Radio Derby - live from a chocolate factory.
Thornton's really pulled out all the stops to show them a good time.

kids paint their own eggs

The
kids decorated their own easter eggs with some signatures that wouldn't
have disgraced a doctor, watched the experts at work making chocolates
in special moulds,and then went on to talk to Shane O'Connor on
air, and to have lunch in the staff restaurant. Very executive -
napkins and glasses all laid out.

Shane's
programme was also the scene of further Voices goings-on when Doreen
Turnbull came into the studio on the Wednesday, to talk about her
book on Alvaston, and appeal for more stories and photos for her
sequel.
So many people called in that Shane decided to carry on into the
second hour of the programme, and Doreen made lots of useful contacts.
She was keen, too, to mention the reunion she organises annually
for folk from the Alvaston area...and told us that the money they
raised at the do would go to St Martin's school this year.

It
turns out she went there herself when it was still Southgate girls'
school. As she said she'd love to see what it's like now, we've
arranged for Doreen and a couple of her friends to visit and meet
the current staff and kids after Easter.
