It was a tight battle but really there were only two couples in the running.

Helen and Joe set out at a fair pace but right there on their heels were slinky duo Jenny and Michael.

The balance kept tipping between cute kids and glamorous sophistication (who could disagree that Jenny's dress was pure Hollywood?).

But the lady in pink with her matching man won in the end.

Well done to Jenny and Michael, we're treating them to a meal for two at one of Derby's finest restaurants. All this just for looking good!!

Were you at the University of Derby's May Ball?

Glamour girls and funky fellas strutted their stuff to Girls Aloud, Kid Symphony and the Stereomimics at this year's May Ball.

It all cracked off on Friday 14th May

If you think you saw Jacko in the VIP bar, your beer goggles were not deceiving you! Well, not quite. Navi - a real-life moonwalking Wackalike - was seen doing what MJ does best. Navi was such a hit last year, the Student Union couldn't resist inviting him back.

Take a look at our other galleries for more cracking shots from the May Ball including:

The Boys in Black
Burger Babes
Whoa...headbangers
Girls Aloud
Candy Floss Cuties
The Dudes
Monocle Man
Wack-alike
Lasses with glasses

and loads, loads more...

Did you have what it takes to last it through till breakfast time?
Tell us on our talk board below.

As the sun came up there were frayed ball gowns, untucked tuxes and lots of stilettos minus the feet they arrived with.

We sent our photographers out to grab a few pictures. Here's some from the beginning of the night (when everyone was still looking respectable).

Almost Made It gallery
O(not everyone made it into our final fifteen, see if you're in our almost made it gallery)

Were you at the ball? How was it for you?

I had a wicked night!! My best mate and I bopping away to the cheesy tunes!! Loved every minute of it!!! Was
Darshna, London

It sucked bigtime. I thougth there were gonna be strippers and stuff. But no!!! I'd bet the Walkabout would have been a better place for the evening
Marcel, Derby

i thought the visuals were awsome!
jimmy derby

jenny and micheal should win they look great. it was a fab night
claire edinburgh

Rory, why didn't you stay in and scrub your toilet then we wouldn't have to listen to you crying, what did you expect? Coldplay?... I thought it was a top night and keeping 3000 students happy is pretty damn impressive- remember this is a student union event, not Glastonbury
dave, derby

no offence but, i have never been to a event that was so badly orgainsed, over priced, and quite frankly i would have rather spent the night scrubbing the indside of my toilet, all it needed was a monkey and some over priced *****y candy floss, and then it would have been a real circus
rory, not the may ball

My last May Ball but it was my best. Good to go out on a high!! Might even visist next year again. Cheap drinks and cheesy music - you cant beat it!!!
Lynsey, Derby

girls aloud were poo, but the night was cool
gemma , derby

YEH!! I KNEW JENNY & MICHEAL WOULD WIN!!!
Danielle 4rm Bignall End!

I'm not a student, ha ha,
Farooq, Normo

T'was a good night!!
Lee, Derby

the best dressed couple is deffo Holly and Scott. scott looks v dashing and holly is just gorgeous. they look really good together.
ecila, derby

I thought the ball was well over-rated and an anti-climax. I built myself up for one of the best nights of my life and it ended up being little more than an average nite out with bells on. Though it is what you make it n i tried hard to make it special but can't say it happend for me, ill be goin next year tho, it was a great experience & i would recommend people to go, if not just to get dressed up.
Tonto, Derby

Why did you cut out Nessy and me and Umar are not a couple but thanks for using our faces for the best dressed couple link. We all had a wicked night and we had VIP status!! Cheers Mandy you rock!! XXXXXX
Karen, Derby

First time at the May Ball and thought it was fantastic! Groove 66 by far the best. The place was rockin! Please book for next year!
Dave, Derby

the ball was the first i had been to a great effort was made by me in preperation and must say looked good.the ball itself was wicked , girls aloud were crap , pat sharp looked fit.michael jackson dude was great.i managed to stay till 6am was the best night ive had in a long time peace out xx
kerrie , derby

JENNY & MICHAEL! JENNY & MICHAEL! JENNY & MICHAEL! JENNY & MICHAEL! JENNY & MICHAEL! JENNY & MICHAEL R THE BEST!!!
Danielle 4rm Bignall End

We were the best dressed and we weren't even nominated. So we vote for Tamsin and Steve they looked simply delicious ummm. lol x
Jon and Vicks

STEREOMIMICS AND GROOVE66 WERE THE BANDS THAT I ENJOYED THE MOST, GIRLS ALOUD WERENT WORTH WATCHING (OTHER THAN FOR LETCHING AT!). BOOK EM BOTH FOR NEXT YEAR!! JOHNNY MOPED
JOHNNY, ALLESTREE

as a rockin' and shockin' type girl! can't help thinking that Jenny and Michael have a mega laugh and great time together, they deserve to win..most at ease and natural couple in the photos.
Helen, Sheffield

Having looked on the site to vote for my mate (who i must say scrubs up well!!), i decided to read the comments bored, all be it i didnt attend the ball but it sounds like it was a good night. however there is always someone who has to take something too serious this being cat and bass! Best dressed couple is just a light hearted bit of fun, as stated at the bottom of the voting box, and for someone to right comments about how they should be in the select group and giving people thier moment in their rubbish lives is not in the context that this competion is there for. However if cat and bass are ever out on the town when i am next in derby i will make sure to meet up with them and i will buy them both a pint, i believe they drink sour grapes!!
Marc, Manchester

Why would 5 girls who made it through a nation wide talent search on the basis of their vocal ability mime? I worked at this years May Ball and they weren't miming- top voices and very nice girls as well.
tim, Belper

Just out of interest, how was David (no record label will have me) Sneddon and old wash ups Boney M, better than this years ball?! Last years line up sucked, there was no fun fair either- I had a wicked time this year! what did you expect from Girls Aloud-an acustic set? They're hot, the songs rock and no one cared that they mimed! well done everyone who helped organise a top night.
Colin, derby

girls aloud more like mute girls who can't be arsed
phill yates bista

Went to the may ball. Was crap this year. Was excellent last year. oh well. have great fun everyone. Hayles
Hayley, derby

Holly and Scott look great - especially Holly's beautiful sari.
Chris

IM SURPRISED NO CREDIT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO DERBY UNIVERSITYS' OWN URBAN MUSIC GROUP CHOCOLATE MOODS(NOT CHOCOLATE MOUSE AS WRITTEN ON THE FLYER),THEY WERE FANTASTIC,I REALLY THINK THEY SHOULD BE SHOWN A LOT MORE APPRECIATION
KAY,DERBY

Jenny & Michael look fab & they r definitely the best! I really hope they win! xx p.s. HELLO!!!
Danielle 4rm Bignall End!

I AM ON THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sabiha derby

Fantastic night and great performances, so much better than last years ball.Wish the bars had ice for the drinks though, everyone was sweating bucketloads!
Johnny, Derby

All the couples look fantastic. In all fairness though Catherine and Richard get my vote.
Phil, London

sound very interesting and will like to attend the next event
petrus, leicester

i think catherine and richard look great. they should at least be on a par at the top, if not clear winners.
federico, mexico

Brilliant session, loved it all. Saw Groove66 in the Richardson Lounge, they were excellent. Why weren't they on the main stage??
Darren, Spondon

Hello Jenny & Michael!! u both looked ded cool & u shud definitely win! ur the best!!!!!!! xxx
Danielle & Lauren from Audley!!

we had a brill nite but most of it was taken up by us having to get ready to perform! we really enjoyed it and any comments on our dance would be greatly appreciated - we were all nervous and most were very drunk! our photo is under girls aloud section.
dance club

I can sum the ball up in one word: awesome! Anyone who's been to previous balls will tell that this was amongst the best ever!! It rocked!
Tracey Derby

top top night, thanks for all your support on the night, met girls aloud they were all nice, hope to be back next year. if you liked the set, come and see much more at the flowerpot sun 30th may www.stereomimics.co.uk
stereomimics

Great night, hot food and hotter ladies, the music was great too. I enjoyed Groove 66! Jenny and Michael should win.....
Kev Derby

Groove66 were the band of the evening for me - they were fantastic and loads of people were up and dancing away!! p.s. that fella on bass guitar was gorgeous!!
Amy, Derby

Oh what a brilliant night!! The tribute acts you had on were just sooo good, they were the highlight of my evening.(better than girls aloud). Micheal jackson bloke was awesome, and the stereomimics were fantastic, how much does that bloke sound like Kelly???. it was a really brilliant night/morning. Well done to all the organisers.
Hayley, Derby

The best dressed was the guy in a kilt, who is the girl on Sharp-dressed fellas and sweet senoritas... with two other girls drinking coke and wearin a flowery dress, was chatin to her then lost her while getin a hot dog any reply welcome.
lee,

I went to the ball and had a great time will be going again next year.
Rob Derby

Heard about the party. Scott & Holly do it for us!
Craig & Jan (USA)

We think the most stylish couple of the night award should go to Scott (yum) and Holly (very elegant). A grand effort has been made by hard-up students!
Julie & Kev

Wow - Look at Lloyd's cape ! Fantastic !
Liz

Alan looks fresh. He da mann.
Greg Blundell, Doncaster

I was dressed better than them, but never mind keep on making them unfortunate ones feel better about their rubbish lives.
cat and bass, home

They all look gorgeous, cannot wait to see who wins! Good luck to you all.
Phillipa, UK

holly and scott are the best
PINKY derby

damn brother, that alan is F-I-N-E fine!!!!
james, chester

Helen and Joe look to be a couple who are out there to have fun, which is what it's all about. Ruth and Tom would have gotten my second vote had I actualy had one.
Jason, Manchester

Jenny and Michael should win by far!!!
Lauren from Audley

Tamsin and Steve (in the almost made it)were by far the most stylich couple, I think they should be upgraded and win. x
Derby

Pat Sharpe rules! Girls Aloud were very disappointing! The fairground closed at 2am just as the night got going and the food tent was chaos - and not in a good way. But other than that the only thing to ruin my evening was the pain from my throbbing feet!
Vicky, Nottingham

YES MATE! the ball was wicked! managed to stay till 6am too. cant wait till the photos are all posted and iv got my disposable's pics back. Will deffinatly be going again next time round. Thanks to all the organisers, we (the students) realise its not an easy task and it appreciate the effort made by all of you!
