Another must win game for a Rams side bolstered by the addition of new signings Jeff Kenna and Paul Peschisolido to the starting line up.
Derby dominated the first half but were unable to dent a stubborn Rotherham defence. Huddlestone came close with a piledriver whilst Peschisolido shot wide.
Paul Boertien replaced the injured Michael Johnson after half an hour and Lee Holmes was brought on at half-time to replace Candido Costa.
Then on the hour mark came a moment to lift the spirits at Pride Park. The ever-lively Paul Peschisolido saw his fierce shot saved by Mike Pollitt but was quickest to the rebound to fire the Rams into the lead.
During the next 15 minutes, Peschi had further chances to add another goal but couldn't find the net. A standing ovation was his reward as he left the field just a few minutes from the end.
Rotherham pushed forward towards the end but it was too little too late and the Peschisolido goal was enough to give the Rams a vital three points.
